After a month of teasing new music over social media, Djo — the indie pop moniker by actor Joe Keery — officially announced the upcoming release of his third studio album, The Crux. The record will be released on April 4th through AWAL Records, and the first single "Basic Being Basic" is now available for streaming. Listen to it below:
“It’s kind of a shot fired to anyone who's trying to be of the moment,” says Keery about the new single, which takes on a satirical tone to explore the peculiarities of online culture, as well as the relationship between fame, self-expression, and personal relationships.
Djo first announced today's release of "Basic Being Basic" on January 7 through a short, cryptic video posted to his social media accounts. The video also revealed the title of his third album, as Keery is seen walking past a door with a sign above that says, "The Crux." Since then, he's been uploading other, teaser trailer-esque snippets to promote his new tracks, and he slowly revealed the album's tracklist over a series of nine Instagram posts that reveal the cover art when put together.
Following the success of his 2022 sophomore album DECIDE, as well as several acting projects including the filming of seasons four and five of Stranger Things, Joe Keery aims to move The Crux away from a synth-heavy, bedroom sound, embracing a 60s-70s pop instrumentation, according to a press release.
Keery remains the main instrumentalist, vocalist, songwriter, and composer for the record, but he also credits longtime collaborator Adam Thein as co-producer and songwriter. The two recorded The Crux at New York's famous Electric Lady Studios.
The tracklist for The Crux is as follows:
- Lonesome Is A State of Mind
- Basic Being Basic
- Link
- Potion
- Delete Ya
- Egg
- Fly
- Charlie’s Garden
- Gap Tooth Smile
- Golden Line
- Back On You
- Crux
Djo also revealed the upcoming Back On You world tour, where he will be travelling to cities across the United States, Canada, Australia/New Zealand, and the UK and Europe. The tour begins in Auckland, New Zealand on February 6 and will continue into June. Coming to support him is Post Animal, a Chicago-based psychedelic rock band Keery once played in before his departure in 2019.
Tickets for the North American, UK and EU dates for the Back On You tour go on sale next Friday, January 31st at 9 am local time. The artist-exclusive presale will occur on January 28 at 9 am local time. Djo will be partenring with PLUS1 LA Fires Fund, giving $1 per ticket goes to helping families, communities, and individuals affected by the recent LA wildfires, according to a press release.
