California-based artist Ded Hyatt has released a video for “Bodies”, the latest single off of his debut LP, Glossy. "Bodies" is an avant-garde R&B track driven by synths, drum machine rhythms, and post-breakup disassociation.

"Bodies" is the collaborative effort between Hyatt and artist-producer team urika's bedroom and Shamik Ganguly (ShamGang). In an artist's statement about the track, Hyatt detailed what motivated his creative approach, with a core theme of raw honesty - in all of it's risk and reward - expressed throughout his music:
“Sometimes there’s a poetry or beauty to be had if you don’t actually expose something,” [...] “There’s something sacred that would disperse if you addressed it. But there’s a danger to ignoring that and protecting this supposed sanctity.”
Ded Hyatt began work on his debut album after a post-collegiate hike along the Pacific Crest Trail - an over 2600-mile long route that runs along America's west coast. His return to LA saw a period of artistic growth, where he connected with the co-producers that would ultimately help craft songs like "Bodies", and lead to Glossy's full production. Work on the album began in January 2021, fueled by Hyatt's time outside of LA, as well as the disintegration of his personal relationships amid the 2020 COVID lockdowns. His statement further elaborated on the emotions that helped define this latest project:
“A feeling I keep coming back to is the shock of breaking up with someone,” says Hyatt. “The way the world around you looks completely different after a relationship ends. It’s like, there’s that restaurant, and it used to be the restaurant in the timeline when we were together, and now it’s the restaurant in the timeline when we’re not. It takes on a new life that’s eerie and shiny.
The video for "Bodies" was directed by London-based 3D-artist and digital content creator Georgia Canning. Hyatt himself eventually moved to London while finishing the album, having recorded most of it in his home state of California. During this time abroad he earned a degree in environmental policy, adding another layer to the story of Glossy's creation - one that Hyatt further reflected on when describing the album's purpose:
“I think time used to feel endless,” reflects Hyatt, “and I felt like I could keep trying things, lives, people on like costumes. Glossy is about realizing that you can’t escape the costumes you tried on. You carry everything you tried on with you.”
Glossy was released on October 21, 2024 - you can check out the full album on Ded Hyatt's Bandcamp page, or through your preferred streaming service.
