The rollout for Death Cab for Cutie's 11th studio album I Built You A Tower continues today with the release of new single "Punching the Flowers" along with a dance-led video by LA-based filmmaker Jason Lester, who also directed the video for lead track "Riptides."
Watch the video for "Punching the Flowers" below:
The song was inspired by seeing a fist-flying toddler rage fit outside a bodega and turning that into a metaphor for feeling trapped by something beautiful and acting out in frustration, "with a voice like the sound of slamming doors" as the song goes. "'Punching the Flowers' is a song about stagnation and the feeling of being imprisoned by The Known," says the band's Benjamin Gibbard. "And about the damage done when someone ventures deeper into the unknown.”
I Built You a Tower is out June 5 via ANTI- Records (pre-order here), and is described by Death Cab's Nicholas Harmer as a record that returned the band to their roots, and the confidence of knowing they were on the right path purely by their own reactions to the music.
The band's next show will be at Outside Days Festival in Denver, CO, followed by the I Built You a Tower World Tour that kicks off in Minneapolis on July 10.
