The Daily Mail claimed to have the first public images of The White Stripes’ drummer Meg White in over a decade. An article, published by the newspaper on August 6, contained a series of photographs of a woman after reportedly following and covertly photographing her throughout Detroit.

The only issue (besides the stalking, secret photography, and invasion of privacy) is that the woman is not Meg White.

The article has since been deleted, but it had already justly garnered its fair share of criticism. The woman featured in the article has now been identified by multiple sources as a friend of White’s. According to The Guardian, the woman even told the Daily Mail that they had mistaken her for White when the newspaper approached her. The Mail still went ahead and published the story, apparently taking her courteous response of “thank you” after being complimented on The White Stripes as confirmation of her identity.

Karen Elson, singer-songwriter and former wife of Jack White, also commented on the Daily Mail’s article, saying, “What’s so disheartening is the great lengths they took to try and hunt her down and how reckless and cruel it was to post images of another woman all over the internet.”

The Daily Mail have not addressed the situation directly, though the article has since been removed from its website.
