Chance The Rapper going to trial over lawsuit filed by ex-manager

The lawsuit filed by former Chance The Rapper manager Pat Corcoran is heading to trial after a judge denied Chance's request to dismiss the 2020 lawsuit seeking $3 million in unpaid royalties, according to court records.

Chance's legal team issued a statement to Music Business Worldwide, responding to the ruling:

“We respectfully believe that the Court incorrectly denied summary judgment, as there is no legal or factual basis for Mr. Corcoran or his entity to obtain additional compensation from Mr. Bennett or his entities for a full three years after Mr. Corcoran was fired. Mr. Bennett looks forward to further demonstrating at trial that this claim by his disgruntled former manager is entirely meritless.”

The lawsuit arrived a few months after Chance quit working with his Corcoran, known as "Pat The Manager," in April 2020. Corcoran claims the pair had a verbal agreement that the rapper would pay him up to three years after the duo stopped working together, according to court documents.

Chance's lawyers responded by arguing that verbal agreements violate an Illinois law that requires certain contracts lasting longer than one year to be in writing.

Chance countersued Corcoran in November 2021, claiming he essentially "sabotaged" a deal for Chance to become a face of United Masters, a music distribution company.

He also dissed the longtime manager in his counterclaim by saying Corcoran was on the "fringes of the rap music scene in Chicago," according to court records.

“Mr. Corcoran has been paid in full under his management services contract with Mr. Bennett,” Chance’s legal team told the Chicago Tribune. “Yet he chose to file a groundless and insulting lawsuit that ignores his own improper self-dealing and incompetence ... Mr. Bennett has moved to dismiss the majority of that meritless lawsuit, and filed his own lawsuit to remedy the harm that Mr. Corcoran caused through his breaches of duty. Mr. Bennett trusts the legal system to reveal the truth of the parties’ relationship in due course.”

A judge disagreed and dismissed the motion March 26, according to court records, and now the suit heads to trial.
