Bruce Springsteen to share even more unreleased music in 'Nebraska '82: Expanded Edition'

Today, Bruce Springsteen announced that he would be releasing an expanded version of his adored sixth studio album, Nebraska, originally released in 1982.

Coming October 17 via Sony Music, Nebraska '82: Expanded Edition will feature five discs revisiting the same album in slightly different ways: previously unreleased outtakes from the recording sessions, the famous "Electric" sessions, one recorded and one filmed version of his live performance of the Nebraska album, and a 2025 remaster.

In total, the box set is made up of four LPs and one Blu-Ray disc containing a filmed performance of Nebraska at New Jersey's Count Basie Theatre.

The Electric Nebraska sessions occurred in 1982. For these, Springsteen reimagined his album backed by a full band instead of the stripped-backed versions that were eventually officially released. (Some songs were scrapped altogether and held for his follow-up, Born in the U.S.A.)

Playing alongside Max Weinberg and Gary Tallent at the time, the singer-songwriter explained, "It was kinda like punk rockabilly. We were trying to bring Nebraska into the electric world," according to a press release. These sessions are featured on Disc 2 of the 5-disc box set.

The first single — an electric version of Springsteen's famous 1984 hit "Born in the U.S.A." — is available for streaming now. Listen to it below:

Discs 3 and 5 feature a special performance at New Jersey’s Count Basie Theatre in both audio and video form respectively. Having never toured behind Nebraska, Springsteen recently played it in sequence for a live audience for the first time nearly 40 years later. "I think in playing these songs again to be filmed, their weight impressed upon me," he said. "I’ve written a lot of other narrative records, but there's just something about that batch of songs on Nebraska that holds some sort of magic."

Lastly, the first disc offers all the outtakes from this period in Springsteen's career. Recorded in one-off studio sessions or solo home sessions, rarities like "Losin’ Kind", "Child Bride", "Downbound Train", and more have been mixed and mastered for release.
