Broken Social Scene return with 'Remember The Humans' and North American tour with Metric and Stars

After an almost ten-year hiatus, the Toronto collective Broken Social Scene make their return today. The band has announced they'll be releasing Remember The Humans, their sixth studio record, on May 8 via Arts & Crafts. For this LP, they returned to the studio with long-time collaborator David Newfeld, who produced 2002's You Forgot It In People and their 2005 self-titled album.

Broken Social Scene have also shared their lead single, "Not Around Anymore". Written by front man Kevin Drew, the nostalgic track comes with an accompanying music video. Watch/listen to it below:

The new record addresses both loss and reunion. On one hand, it's a return to the community the cult band has formed with its members. The core members are joined once again by former members Feist and Lisa Lobsinger, as well as Hannah Georgas for several collaborative tracks. "You're going to see a lot of resurgence of people going back to the roots of who they are," says Drew via press release, "because things in their lifetime have gotten quite lost. I think we've let each other down, and I think it's art that always tries to prevail, and tries to get us back on track."

Guitarist Charles Spearin describes the band's rekindling with Newfeld as "a childlike energy that is really contagious," adding, "his production suits the chaos of our songwriting so well." This reflects on the new single's abstract quality: sure, it sounds very much like a familiar Broken Social Scene song, but it's also arguably updated to the electronic and indie rock tastes of today.

Yet, loss still lingers in the twelve tracks on Remember The Humans. Drew and Newfeld reconnected through a shared sense of grief, as both sadly lost their mothers during the album's recording.

Spearin adds that, in the 20 years since the band's breakout record, they've felt drawn to deepening and exploring the complications of their sprawling community. "There's a different kind of honesty in this record," he says. "We've had success, we've lost friends, we've lost parents, we're at this 'What happens next?' stage in life."

Broken Social Scene also announced their upcoming All The Feelings North American tour, where they'll be promoting their record alongside fellow Canadian big-names Metric (who also announced an album today) and Stars. Tickets will be on sale this Friday, February 6, at 10 am local.
