30 years since the release of their fourth studio record, Blur announced that they would be sharing a vinyl reissue of 1995's The Great Escape. Coming out December 12 via Parlophone, the anniversary edition of their iconic album features new album art made by artist, designer, and frequent collaborator Tony Hung, as well as original B-sides and bonus tracks, some of which were previously unreleased yet written in that era.
The vinyl reissue comes in two discs: a yellow one that holds the original album on both sides, and a turquoise one containing all the bonus tracks.
The Great Escape originally came out September 11, 1995 following a record-breaking summer for both the band and Britpop music. Its leading single "Country House", released August 14, 1995, became the subject of the infamous Battle of Britpop, where it competed (and won) against Oasis' "Roll With It", the lead single off (What's The Story) Morning Glory? for the no. 1 spot on the UK Billboard chart week of release. It became Blur's first-ever no. 1 single, as well as their best-selling one in the band's history. The record debuted at no. 1, making it the second in Blur's history to do so, and it was certified triple-platinum within the year.
The album itself is Britpop at its core, even surpassing the themes and styles of the band's previous record, Parklife (1994). Written as vignettes of different archetypal figures of British society and fully leaning into theatrics and satire, it used the visuals of leisure (pun intended), vacation, and escapism to accentuate the loneliness, detachment, and hypocrisy found in everyone.
