Björk's 'Cornucopia' will be in select theaters this summer

The Cornucopia tour was one of Björk's most ambitious projects to date. Spanning five years and over 45 performances, the Icelandic art pop musician filmed her night at the Altice Arena in Lisbon, Portugal in 2018. On May 7, the Cornucopia concert will premiere in theaters for a limited global release.

"I was deeply inspired by the idea of a fully-immersive experience spreading Utopia and Fossora into fully surround speakers," wrote Björk on Instagram in January. "My intention was to bring what we had created for 21st-century VR into a 19th-century theatre - taking it from the headset to the stage." Because the tour ended up lasting for the duration of two album cycles—Utopia was released in 2017, and Fossora in 2022—she promoted both, focusing on the common themes of addressing climate change. "Throughout this tale," she continued, "there is a subplot woven in: a second story of an avatar—a modern marionette who alchemically mutates, from puppet to puppet, from the injury of a heart wound to a fully healed state."

Björk recently partnered with Apple Music to share an hour-long snippet of her concert in Lisbon. It premiered exclusively on the music streaming platform on Friday, January 24 at 7 pm PT. The full-length version of the Cornucopia immersive theatrical concert will be screened in more than 25 countries on May 7, according to Mixmag.

The description for her concert film reads:

"The production showcases bespoke instruments, including a magnetic harp, a circular flute, an aluphone, and a reverb chamber, and Björk is furthermore joined on stage by musical director and multi-instrumentalist Bergur Þórisson, percussionist Manu Delago, flute septet Viibra, harpist Katie Buckley and the Hamrahlid choir. Digitally animated moving curtains create a modern lanterna magica for live music, transforming 21st-century VR visuals into the grandeur of a 19th-century theatre — and now into an immersive cinema experience, enhanced by meticulously crafted Dolby Atmos spatial audio."

Tickets for the theatrical release of Cornucopia will go on sale March 27. Check the artist's official website for more details on locations, times, and prices.
