Big Harp return with first album in 15 years, share first single "I Got an Itch"

Eleven years after their third — and seemingly last — album Waveless, the indie folk duo Big Harp have announced their fourth studio record, Runs to Blue, out March 27 via Saddle Creek.

The band also shared their first single, "I Got an Itch". Listen:

"I Got an Itch" was one of the last songs recorded for the album, according to Big Harp. Reminiscing on the touring days that brought the two members together, the single explores the adventures of building a life together, all while becoming restless to re-enter the music scene. They sing in the chorus:

"Play one more song with me baby / If we get any saner I’ll go crazy / Let’s get these ratty harmonies the best we can / And trade in the Subaru for a fifteen passenger van."

Stepping away from their collaborative project for eleven years, members Chris Senseney and Stefanie Drootin-Senseney return with ten new tracks that focus on their marriage, their growing family, and their lifelong partnership that began in 2007 through music. Runs to Blue is their simplest-sounding record yet: with just an acoustic guitar, bass, and their two voices recorded live, the album aims to focus more on the honest and intimate delivery of the lyrics.

"One of our goals was to be as plainspoken as possible on this record, with any kind of lyrical tricks or wordplay in service to communication, not in the way of it," said Senseney via press release. "While it has a lot of details that are specific to us, I think the sentiment works for anybody who has ever felt constricted by responsibility or nostalgic for a remembered freedom, real or imagined."

Big Harp's return came with the help of Rilo Kiley's Pierre de Reeder, who offered to help the couple record some new songs after hearing them play during a get-together. They recorded a batch of songs at a time in Reeder's Highland Park studio, and the album eventually came together. He is credited as producer and mixer of Runs to Blue.
