Ahead of the April 18 release of A Study of Losses, Zach Condon of Beirut shared his third single "Tuanaki Atoll" today. Listen to the new track below:
"Tuanaki Atoll" continues the upcoming record's motif of exploring lost knowledge, focusing on an islet near Polynesia that mysteriously vanished in the 1840s. The song captures the energy of this lost utopia — "Its inhabitants were described as a people so peaceful and generous that they had no word in their language for such things as war or murder," according to Condon in a press release — primarily through a "sweet and breezy" ukulele.
Yet the lyrics hint more at the tragedy of the legend of the atoll. The song begins: "Letting the whole world down / How will I be sure this time around? / What if the sun came round? / What if I drowned?"
"Contrastingly yet somewhat fittingly," says Condon, "the lyrics took on a darker edge and ended up reflecting that side of the story. Maybe because personally I doubt that such an Eden-like place could ever exist on Earth."
This is the third single featured on the upcoming record, following "Caspian's Tiger" and "Guericke's Unicorn."
