Arca and Tokischa take mothering to a new level on "Chama" collab

Alan Pedder

Venezuelan experimentalist Arca shows her softer side on a new, long-promised collaboration with Dominican artist Tokischa. Recorded at Electric Lady Studios late last year and debuted live in New York earlier this summer, "Chama" is the first new music from Arca since the Kick series outtake "Яitual" dropped in April 2023. Tokischa has previously collaborated with Rosalía on 2021's "Linda", and was one of the artists chosen by Madonna a couple of years ago to rework her 2005 hit "Hung Up".

In the video for "Chama", shot in a forest in Barcelona, Arca and Tokischa are portrayed as heavily pregnant – perhaps as a reference to Arca's previous comments on how the title of the Kick series was chosen to represent a baby kicking in its mother's womb rather than anything violent.

Says Arca in a press release:

“This one’s for all the dolls, the queens, and the good little witches,
if I shine, it’s for us. Courage to all my butterflies in defending softness,
tenderness, magic, and sweetness in a world full of hardness. Shine without fear, chamas. yo adentro de ti tú adentro de mi."
