Anna Calvi announced earlier today that she'd be releasing Is This All There Is?, her new EP, on March 20 via Domino. The EP consists of four songs, each featuring a collaboration with renowned artists: Matt Berninger, Laurie Anderson, Perfume Genius, and Iggy Pop.
Today, Calvi shared newest single, "God's Lonely Man", a collaboration with Iggy Pop. The two star an accompanying music video, directed by Luigi Calabrase. Watch/listen to the new song below:
"He's disruptive, raw, and honest — a singular force," says Calvi of Iggy, per a press release. "His presence was so perfect for the narrative of this song," which, she says, creates a dialogue between herself and the personifed version of self-destruction.
"God's Lonely Man" follows "I See A Darkness", a cover of Bonnie "Prince" Billy's 1999 track and duet with Perfume Genius.
Is This All There Is? will be the first EP in a trilogy of records about personal metamorphosis, according to Calvi. Inspired by the shift in identity she faced after becoming a parent, she and her collaborators seek the answers to life's most basic questions. She says:
"Having a child was so transformative it made me consider the possibility that everything in life could potentially shift, and that is scary but incredibly freeing. I didn’t want to take anything for granted any more. I want to exist in the best way for my child. I wanted to ask the most basic human question — is this all there is?"
On the collaborations, Calvi mentions that she wanted to work with people who inspired her throughout her career. "The opportunity to be in the same space as people you love is so inspiring," she says. "To see how different people approach the same thing — it sharpens you. It’s thrilling." All three artists on the upcoming EP "share a kind of subversive honesty," according to the artist, who admires their individuality and strong sense of self.
