50 Cent calls into question Jay-Z's involvement with the Super Bowl Halftime Show

Earlier today, 50 Cent indirectly commented on Jay-Z's recent civil suit accusing him and Sean 'Diddy' Combs of raping a 13 year-old girl in 2000.

"Ok I don’t know what’s going on, but are we gonna still have the Super Bowl. I’m just asking for a friend!"

50 Cent posted to Instagram, attaching the popular meme of himself driving the car. The rapper is referring to Jay-Z's entertainment company Roc Nation's ongoing production of the Super Bowl Halftime Show.

Roc Nation became the NFL's Live Music Entertainment Strategist in 2019 as a part of the Inspire Change Initiative, a social justice campaign that focused on the Super Bowl Halftime Show. The partnership deal was marketed as an effort to make all aspects of the NFL more inclusive, according to Variety. Jay-Z had been publicly outspoken of the league's mistreatment of its Black players, particularly Colin Kapernick, who were involved in the 2016-2017 kneeling protests to bring awareness to police brutality and institutional racism. By joining the Entertainment team, which gave Roc Nation control over the selection of performers for the Super Bowl Halftime Show, Jay-Z aimed to highlight the massive success hip-hop, rap, and latin artists have had on American music culture.

Furthermore, Jay-Z regularly criticized the league's selection of artists for the Half Time performances and was dissatisfied with their management style, according to a 2019 press conference led by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. "The process of selection was fractured," he said. He later added in an interview with The New York Times that the former process of selecting performers—where the headliner was contingent on performing with two other artists handpicked by the league's entertainment team—did not give the artists control over their appearance. "That is not how you go about it, telling someone that they’re going to do the halftime show contingent on who they bring," said Jay-Z, recalling his turning down a potential Half Time performance after the NFL told him he had to perform with Kanye West and Rihanna. "I said forget it. It was a principle thing.” Roc Nation's goal was to give artists full control over their performance, according to the 2019 press conference. "You pick someone, you speak to them, you let them have it, and then you move on...And I think that, you know, let the artist be the artist.”

Roc Nation has since acquired a massive influence over the Super Bowl Halftime Show, with Jay-Z as the main architect. Since 2020, Roc Nation has brought on big-name acts like Jennifer Jopez, Shakira, The Weeknd, Rihanna, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar—most of which are current Roc Nation clients. 50 Cent spoke to Hollywood Reporter earlier this year and discussed Jay-Z's weight in decision-making, alleging that Jay-Z attempted to block him from appearing as a guest artist during the Emmy-winning Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show. "[Roc Nation] didn’t want me there," he said. "Eminem wouldn’t do it without me. That’s how I ended up on the show because he was not coming if I didn’t do it...I’m the surprise. I’m not on the bill at all. But they couldn’t get Em to do it without me."

50 Cent also has a long-standing "beef" with Sean 'Diddy' Combs and has been outspoken about the disgraced rapper's history of sexual assualt and child rape accusations, according to Business Insider and Hollywood Reporter. 50 Cent is currently producing a documentary about Combs and sexual assault in the hip-hop industry, and he's been sharing teaser clips to social media.

With the recent civil suit against Jay-Z, it's unclear if Roc Nation will continue to partner with the NFL for this year's Half Time Show, where Kendrick Lamar is set to headline. The NFL extended its partnership with Roc Nation this past October, and the league announced that the partnership would continue in the same dynamic, according to Bloomberg.

Jay-Z has also denied any claims of child rape since the civil lawsuit was filed this weekend. "These allegations are so heinous in nature that I implore [Tony Buzbee] to file a criminal complaint, not a civil one!!" he wrote in official Roc Nation statement and open letter to the prosecuting lawyer Buzbee on December 8. "Whomever would commit such a crime against a minor should be locked away, would you not agree?"
