Hi, everyone. Naphthany Napthano here, the internet's busiest music nerd. And it's time for a Weekly Track Roundup, where I give my thoughts and I give my feelings on a bunch of tracks that have dropped over the past week or so. They're all linked down below, so you could check them out for yourselves, regardless of how I feel about them. That is what does happen in this segment.
Also, our Turntable Lab affiliate link, we get kickback from it if you use it to buy vinyl, turntable stuff, whatever it is, whatever your little heart desires. Granted that you spend your own money to purchase it.
Also, our Patreon page, you can get some bonus monthly content while supporting us in the process. That'd be great. And access to our Discord community, too.
And a shout out to our Shorts page.
Shout out to Austen, who has come through with a suggestion here before we get into the main tracks. This is Jane Remover, "jane_remover_remixes_vol2.zip", NTS Radio from a July 18th broadcast, a new hour-long drop of Jane remixing various pop songs. Austen says it's a fucking whirlwind and probably the most fun thing that she will hear this year. She also says Jane snapped on the visuals. So there you go. Check that out. Remix.
Worst Tracks this Week
All right, worst tracks of the week. We have just one.
Rob49 - On Dat Money (with Cardi B)
It's this Rob49 track featuring Cardi B. It is awkward, it's annoying to listen to and awful. Even before Cardi B is on the track. I didn't even really make it to the end. It is that bad and repetitive and mind-numbing. Not into it, sadly.
...meh...
Moving on from there. Meh, the tracks I was on the fence with. You might like them more than me. Thought they were still worth shouting out, though. They are as follows.
Big Sean - Yes
We have this new one from Big Sean over here. "Yes," first big single for his new album cycle. And it's okay. It's just okay. Not as exciting or as thrilling as I hoped it would be, given it is the first taste. He is with his flow, his very over-the-top bars, and with this epic a little melodic lick going on in the instrumental. I think he's really trying to pull from a certain era of Kanye's catalog, but he doesn't quite have the chaotic energy to make it sound as sinister or as wild as I think he wants it to be. I don't know, it's coming up a little short.
Kimbra - Demi God ft. Sahtyre
Following that, we have the final track, this new multi-song single that Kimbra has just released. "Demigod" is the title of the track, and it's like this somewhat dark, psychedelic, I don't know, little pop and wrap blend. I don't know if this thing is necessarily Kimbra's strong suit, even if the guest verse on it isn't too bad, honestly.
Joe Jonas - Work It Out
Moving on from there. Joe Jonas, of all people, has a new track out titled Work It Out that I think is decent. He's giving them, if you could do a much more sanitary version of some classic old-school strokes vibes, which I mean, to sanitize that sound, it's not the best, but it was listenable. It was vibey. If it was playing on the loudspeaker at a Macy's, I wouldn't be mad at it. I could leave it there.
Joey Valence and Brae - THE BADDEST (BADDER) ft. Ayesha Erotica
Joey Valence and Brae have a new remix of "THE BADDEST" featuring Ayesha Erotica. No more, no less. Not exactly like a new mind-blowing version or anything. Still the same great song, just an additional feature. It's cool. It's chill. I respect it. Extend the life of the song out, boys. It's a banger.
Japandroids - "Chicago"
All right, we have Japandroids who have come back to release music after how many years? I can't even remember. Many, many, many years to tell us that this is going to be their last release. Okay. "Chicago" is the title of the track, and yeah, it's a passionate indie rock song with some very light, light, light, light, light punk influences. And "Chicago," impassioned singing as well. It's not too bad. A very Japandroids of them.
Hakushi Hasegawa - KYŌFUNOHOSHI
We have a new one from Hikushi Hasegawa. Some of the most intense singles I've heard this year in the lead up to this forthcoming album that they are releasing very soon. Not even going to try to pronounce the title of this track. It's just linked down below. It's absolutely insane. Look, some songs on this record, as admirable and as insane as they are, they are simultaneously just like a little wee, just tidbit much rhythmically. And just the noise level, just the persistent cords, and just the density of it all is just so much to take in. And in some cases with tracks, it's absolutely thrilling. In others, It just gives me just very fast. It's a fast track to ear fatigue, I'll say that. And this track was definitely that instance, unfortunately. But still looking forward to hearing the album in full when it does eventually drop.
Benny the Butcher, Black Soprano Family - Summer '24
From there, we have a new one from Benny the Butcher, "Summer '24", Black Soprano Family. It's just a little quick, free style type cut. That's not too bad. No more, no less. Wish there was more to it, but you get what you get, I suppose.
Best Tracks of the Week
All right, and best tracks of the week. We have quite a few of those to get through, so pay attention, and let's do it.
Tropical Fuck Storm - Antimatter Animals (Live in Chicago)
All right, we have a new live recording from Tropical Fuck Storm. It is, again, a new live version of the song "Animated Animals." It is wild, it is noisy, it is a chaotic version of the track, kicks total ass. And yeah, just really enjoying that. So Anti-Matter, sorry, "AntiMatter Animals" is the name of the track.
SBTRKT - Classic Theme
All right, moving on from there. SBTRKT has come through with a new cut titled "Classic Theme" and he is just going full, full, full, like full club, funky house, great beats, awesome twisted chipmunk vocal samples all over the track. It is percussive, it is hype, it is high energy, and just a great pace. A lot of good changes and builds throughout the track as well. Haven't heard a single from him go quite this hard in a long time, so really enjoying that.
Sampha & Little Simz - Satellite Business 2.0
Moving on from there, we have "Satellite Business 2.0" over here from Sampa featuring a Little Simz. So having them cross over on this track is absolutely incredible. Everything I could hope for and more, I will leave it at that.
Porter Robinson - Kitsune Maison Freestyle
All right, next, brand new "Kitsuni Maison Freestyle" from Porter Robinson. Another track in the lead up to this forthcoming album. And yeah, I'm liking the weird cutesy pop rock, everything, blend of genres that has come together on this track. It's quirky, it's a little cheeky. Still, once again, I feel like there are a lot of people that don't really know how exactly to take Porter Robinson at this point in his career. Is this Is this a little silly? Is this a little ironic? Is it totally serious? I think it's a bit of everything. And it's just ultimately just trying to have some fun. And I feel like it's succeeding at that. It's most definitely achieving at that. I think the spoken word bit in the midst of the track is maybe just a little bit too much, a little bit too emo, but it's still a very fun track all around.
JPEGMAFIA - SIN MIEDO
All right, we have a new one from JPEGMAFIA. Did a review for this one over on the Fantano channel, "Sin Meado" or "Without Fear". And yeah, just like a really cool multi-genre banger from Peggy. Huge hits of bass and percussion, some guitar riffs and almost like metal-type solos as well. Some hype lead vocals, a lot of transitions. It's total chaos, but controlled chaos and very fun all the way through.
Molchat Doma - Ty Zhe Ne Znaesh Kto Ya / Son
Alright, we also have Molchat Doma, new record on the way. The band, the Belarusian band has seen fit to drop a couple of singles, one of which is the song "Sun." And yeah, it just all kicks ass. It's gothy, it's dark wavy, it's strange, it's atmospheric, it's eerie and groovy for days. The tracks are quite lengthy as well. So make sure to check those out. It really seems like since going viral on TikTok, they're really trying to up the ante a little bit, and it's sounding good.
Logic - Mission Control ft. T Man the Wizard
Alright, Logic has come through with a new single that I'm really impressed by. The beat is killer. His bars are impressive all the way through. His flow is super confident. He is just on the ball. The corn levels are low. "Mission Control" is the name of the track. T Man and the Wizard is featured on it as well and has a very high appearance toward the back end that I think works very well.
Kelly Lee Owens - Love You Got
We also have Kelly Lee Owens, who has come through with a nice little tech house anthem with some sharp lead vocals on it as well. "Love You Got is" the name of this one. Loving the Grooves, loving the energy, loving the pace.
HEALTH - ASHAMED ft. Lauren Mayberry
We also have a new version of "ASHAMED" from HEALTH with Lauren Mayberry, who I actually think adds quite a bit to the song vocally, a lot to the drama of the track, that's for sure.
Ginger Root - There Was a Time / All Night
Couple more. Ginger Root, two new singles out at once. Of course, they're funky, they're throwback. They are very city pop, very nostalgic, very fun and cutesy.
Gillian Welch & David Rawlings - Empty Trainload of Sky
We have a new one from Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, the track "Empty Trainload of Sky." It is a smoky piece of all country with great songwriting and greater vocals. That's quite convincing and beautiful. Really looking forward to their forthcoming collab album over here.
Frost Children & Sebii - Boss Baby
Also, we have another collab, a new single or a handful of new tracks from Frost Children and also Sebii, which which is a crossover I absolutely did not see coming. I don't know if this is really going to be for everybody. It's very silly. It's very tongue-and-cheek. It's got a lot of, high pitch vocals, which I know is not necessarily everybody's thing, but this track, "Boss Baby," I thought was funny, I thought it was entertaining, I thought it was creative, I thought it was neat and interesting. As far as what I know of Frost Children's music and Sebii's music, it's a really effective crossover. I feel like it's a sound that respects both of their styles and vibes. It's a lot more common ground than I think you might expect.
Fat Dog - Wither
We also have another single from the forthcoming Fat Dog album, which is quickly becoming one of my most anticipated albums this year. The song Wither is incredible. It is a high octane piece of gothy synth and post-punk.
"You got to with a baby, you got to before you die."
It's just great. It's just hype as hell. It's just an incredible front to back. That's really all I can say. It's a thrill ride. I feel like I'm in a video game or something. It's just stellar.
dj galen & N. Hell - SUMMER SLUDGE (racing music for bus drivers)
Galen Tipton, under the name dj galen, has dropped a new handful of very jittery, very insane, very challenging, constantly changing, and exciting new dance tracks. The song of the trio of tracks that I would like to point out to you is "SUMMER SLUDGE (racing music for bus drivers)" that is, in fact, what it sounds like. It is that unhinged.
Colin Stetson - The Six
We also have a new one from Colin Stetson, who he just dropped an album not too long ago, and he has another one on the way. "The 6" is one single from it. And per usual, Colin is continuing to do his continuous breathing, his just wild sax odyssey excursions, and doing wild stuff with the contact mics and all sorts of various sounds. And just like every few albums or so, he finds ways to up the ante and just make it sound more mysterious and more out there and just stranger and eerier, and I just think he's continuing to outdo himself with this new track.I'm absolutely loving it, and I'm just very blown away that he's able to keep pushing it along in the in the way that he is.
Chat Pile - I Am Dog Now
We have a new one as well from one of the best out there to do it, Chat Pile, once again, hitting us with that very freaky, scary noise rock and sludge. The riffs are incredible. Really reminds me of very, very, very early Swans. The vocals are intense, the bass is there, and the lyrics are just pure Chat Pile. That's really all I could say at this point. Listen, it's killer. It's dark, it's heavy, it's tortured, and it's going to freak you out a little bit. It's unsettling, but in all the best ways. \
Last one, Weird Al has come through with a new "Polkamania!" medley, which is incredible, sounds great. It's just as quirky and as fun and as weird as anything else on this front that he's released over the years. Now, of course, it's been a long time since he's come out with a track like this. So he's covering about an unaddressed decade of pop music. So of course, there's a bit of Taylor Swift in there. There's a bit of Billie Eilish in there. There's a lot of different basses covered. It's very fun. It's very entertaining. "Despacito." He's doing a little bit of it all. He doesn't get to everything, but he gets to enough things, and it's pulled together in a very entertaining fashion, per usual.
That is going to be it for this Weekly Track Roundup. Thank you very much for watching. You guys are the best. I hope you got some good recommendations out of this, even though I feel a little bit out of it.
Anthony Fontana, Weekly Tracks, forever.
