Daniel Pickard shares karaoke-style video for new single "Nominee"

With just over a fortnight to go before his debut album Behaviour drops via AWAL on October 23, London-based synth-pop artist Daniel Pickard has shared a second single from the record in the shape of "Nominee," described as "a young man's awakening to a world of excess and the struggle of power dynamics."

Watch the karaoke-style, headless video below, in which Pickard and his creative director Ben Poulton play on Jungian ideas of the shadow self:

Like last month's "Heartbeats the Flaw," there's a French touch to "Nominee" that suits Pickard's eccentric, self-deprecating stories. This time around, Pickard imagines a discomfiting encounter between the narrator of the song and a beautiful tour guide, presumably somewhere in France.

"The subject is consumed with pleasure yet not at all confident in neither the protagonist’s nor his own use of it," he explains. "The impetus is to feel something that he hasn’t previously by a disregard of consequence."

Expanding on the idea of the shadow self in a press release, he adds:

"I like to call it the anti-me — played by Ben in the video — who assumes control. The subconscious devil isn’t fully disguised from either its victim or audience; my subconscious mind is making fun of me but is not completely in disguise as it thinks. This is represented in the clip where the green-screen is not fully perfected.
