Fort Lean- Self-Titled

Fort Lean is a Brooklyn quintet band that plays reverby, riff-based indie rock. If you’ve listened to any bands from this scene in the past five years, you probably know exactly what their new self-titled EP sounds like. Fort Lean certainly doesn’t shy away from the cliches and tropes of this style of music, but it’s pretty admirable how sincere this band is. On the opening track, the frontman wails, “What a beach holiday!” and for a moment, you almost forget about all the other bands that have sang pretty much the same line or conveyed the same sentiment in recent years. I suppose what it comes down to is whether you value ambition over quality. With four tracks of meandering, reverb-heavy beach rock, Fort Lean is certainly not an ambitious release, but it is quite good for what it is. My advice? Give it a listen. At its worst, Fort Lean is an EP that you might as well have heard before. At its best, it’s something that reminds you why you started listening to this kind of music in the first place.
