The self-titled debut LP from the Colman Brothers via Wah Wah 45s is inspired by samba and sounds from the golden age of jazz music in the 60s and 70s. Fronting this hi-energy family ensemble are Andrew and Mat Colman, arranging and performing on trumpet and trombone. The Colman sister, Sara, even appears as a guest vocalist on this LP.
This little gem brings to mind moody late-night jazz clubs of the past. From the opening track “Mr. G”–a fitting tribute to Dizzy Gillespie–to the foreboding “The Chief,” which is reminiscent of a soundtrack cut from Dirty Harry. The Colman Brothers are the hazy smoke rising from a KOOL-brand cigarette.
