It might have been Swan Lake song or it might have been a New Pornographers song–I’m not sure, really. All I know is that my first introduction to the voice of Canadian singer-songwriter Dan Bejar was a surprising one.
I fell in love with the guy’s eccentric mannerisms instantly. There’s a really thin quality to his voice, but his lyrics and delivery are robust with personality. Dan’s primary band, Destroyer, is about to drop a new album. The title is Kaputt, and it’s slated for release on 1/25 via Merge.
The fluttering sax solo and echoing synths on “Chinatown” are so cheezy, a part of me cringes on the inside; however, there’s another side of me putting that aforementioned side in a violent headlock. Cheesiness wins! But seriously, the songwriting is pretty great, and I love the lyrics as well. Dan’s always got a knack for hooks. Stream / download:
