When you think of William Tyler, warm and wistful alt-country instrumentals usually come to mind. On his new track "Flight Final", however, the Nashville-based guitarist and composer goes far afield from the usual sylvan pastures.
Recorded on just an iPhone and an old tape machine he found in his grandfather's office, "Flight Final" paints a monochrome scenery of gossamer synths, distorted rustic speaker voices, and rumbling undertones. Listen below:
Those more deeply-immersed in William Tyler's work probably shouldn't be that surprised, given that he has frequently acknowledged the influence of artists like Popol Vuh and Kraftwerk to his own work. Nevertheless, it's interesting to see Tyler bring the guitar more to the background, to create more minimalistic and abstract soundscapes. What, however, is consistent to older work is Tyler's fascination of airplanes, a pet interest he also referenced in "Fail Safe".
Tyler has been prolific last year as well, releasing Secret Stratosphere with his band The Impossible Truth, and his unlikely yet highly lauded collaboration with Kieran Hebden – aka Four Tet – resulting in the tracks "Darkness Darkness / No Services". The Going Through, his collaborative album with Luke Schneider, recently received praise from techno-producer Jon Hopkins.
