Singer. Mattress. Cat., the Aussie experimental shoegaze solo project of Martin Cooke (of Galight Radio), has announced his debut album Subtropical Personality, out December 1. Alongside the announcement comes the lead single and album opener, “Little Broken Moon.”
Listen here:
The track is a stripped-down ’90s lo-fi ditty reminiscent of Daniel Johnston, Sunset Rubdown, or even early Animal Collective. Cooke shared this about “Little Broken Moon”:
"blink and you’ll miss it" track centered around fractured relationships, and the realization that sometimes you need to leave everything and everyone behind to get where you need to be."
Subtropical Personality was written over the course of the last two years on an old acoustic guitar in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Cooke says about the LP:
"The album is a homage to that wildness of my childhood and all the friends who turned to crime to survive. I am the one left holding the torch to tell their stories."
