twenty one pilots, Doja Cat, Carly Rae Jepsen, Joey Bada$$ | Weekly Track Roundup: 8/25/25

All right. Hi, everyone. Anthony Fantano here, Internet's busiest music nerd. It's time for a weekly track roundup. My Thoughts, My Feelings, My Opinions on a bunch of songs, a bunch of tracks, a bunch of music that has come out over the past week or so.

Worst tracks of the week.

We have a handful of those. Well, really, just two, honestly.

First off, Serj Tankian, of System of a Down fame. He has a new solo album on the way, and this "Electric Dreams" single from it is honestly just very drab. The guitars, the vocals just bring us into this dreary exposition, and there's just no highs, there's no lows, there's no thrills. It's just very, very one note and uninteresting. That's really all I can say about it.

We also have LUCKI teaming up with Lil Yachty on a brand new track here. "I Don't Care...". They should have cared. They should have cared. The track goes nowhere fast. It's utterly boring. They should have cared.

All right, meh, the songs I was on the fence with.

You might like them more than me, though. They're still worth shouting out. I still think you should check them out. I don't want any of these to slip through the cracks on you. They're as follows. Bam.

New one over here from Toro Y Moi, who's doing some unearthed and extra tracks from his latest record, which a lot of Chaz's fans were on the fence with this LP because he's doing some pop stuff, and he's doing some trap stuff on here. I don't know if I want this. I want those classic chill wave indie vibes from Chaz. I don't want trap from Chaz, but he seems to have answered that call a little bit by giving us some material from the album in a form, in a fashion that is more stripped down. And "CD-R" was one of my favorite cuts from his new record because it is like a little bit of a stroll down memory lane where he's talking about the development of his career and so on and so forth. And I don't prefer this unearthed demo-ish version to the OG on the album, but it's still cool to hear in a different state. So shout out to a Toro Y Moi, for giving us some new versions of some tracks from the latest LP. And there's more where that came from.

All right, moving on. Shout out to Joyce Manor, who have come through with a downtrodden little country indie cut, "All My Friends are So Depressed". It sounds like it, and it delivers on the lyrics that the title describes.

We also have Joey Bada$$ over here. New track, "Dark Aura". Moody instrumental, passionate delivery. I don't know if Joey is spitting the best verse of his life or anything. I feel like there's a lot of intensity going into this track in terms of the production, in terms of the performance. But I don't know. I mean, to me, lyrically, it doesn't seem to be digging deeper than he does on average, I would say, which for Joey Bada$$ is better than most out there, better than most. But as a single, I just feel like this was all right. Still, new album on the way. Looking forward to it regardless.

We also have Florence + the Machine, "Everybody Scream", first single from a forthcoming album, and it's dramatic, it's over the top. A song titled "Everybody Scream" should be. But I just feel like songwriting-wise, this is not one of the stronger tunes I've ever heard from the project. Still, intense vocals. Florence Welch is the queen of that these days. But I feel like, again, there's been stronger songs out there in the Florence + the Machine canon. And also with bands like The Last Dinner Party out there getting hotter, this whole whimsical pop rock thing. There's competition out there. There's competition out there now. Not competition. I mean, I'm sure they would totally kill it on a tour where they're performing together. And there should be more crossover audience between the two if there's not already. But with all that being said, fun performance, over-the-top vocals. Seems like some pretty expensive production, too, but not a strong tune, in my opinion.

We also have bar italia, who's hitting us over here with another single from their forthcoming LP, "Fundraiser". It's an interesting direction the band is taking things on this one. It's got an early post-punk first couple of records from the cure vibe, I would say, in terms of the vocals, especially. It's not bad. It may be a tad bit derivative, but I'm hoping that with more listens and when I hear the entirety of this Some Like it Hot record that's going to be dropping in October, that it all grows on me because I do have a bit of a soft spot for this sound when it's done correctly, I'll say.

Best tracks, best tracks of the week. Best tracks.

We have a handful of those. Well, not a handful, a lot. So let's get through them.

We have twenty one pilots. twenty one pilots over here hitting us with, I think, the better single, the better new single from this forthcoming LP of theirs, "Drum Show". Nothing too crazy, deep, conceptual, flashy, at least on the surface, in terms of what's going into this track lyrically. It's just a straightforward, hard-hitting, fun, rocking track with some badass bass, great drums, anthemic chorus. Sounds like some of the best moments from Clancy, and I'm liking it quite a bit. Really messing with this one. Really great vocal lines.

All right, we also have a Snooper hitting us once again with that egg punk. We need that egg punk. "Guard Dog" is the name of this new track. It's wild, it's fast, it's raw, it's rough around the edges. And in typical Snooper fashion, it's zany.

All right, we also have a new one over here from, of course, Show Me The Body as well. Nobody out there is doing weirdo banjo punk like Show Me The Body is. Nobody, absolutely nobody, absolutely nobody is doing that weirdo banjo punk like Show Me The Body is. And it's a hard-hitting banger. I'll say that. And hearing the banjo in the raw so much on this track, too, makes it pretty fun and dynamic.

All right, we also have a Jean Dawson hitting us with a stylistic switch up on this "Rock A Bye Baby" track. And he's really doing a little bit of a lost, freaky synth funk gem cut, like Rick James vibes, but a bit weirder, a bit sillier. And I'm liking it. I like the production. His vocals fit really well over this sound, over this style. Maybe some fans who are only used to him doing one thing. What am I saying? No Jean Dawson fan is used to hearing him do one thing. He's never, ever just done one thing. I didn't anticipate this, but I don't know. I don't know what I anticipated. With Jean, he can be hit or miss depending on what he's trying out. Some people are maybe not going to vibe with this track. Me, personally, I think it's cool. And with that being said, I'm probably not anticipating this going to be coming out a whole ton of other songs that sound exactly like this. I mean, maybe a few. But for him, trying his hand at a style that's not his usual thing, he's very going crazy, snapping with the attention to detail. And it's a good tune. It's a good performance. So give it a shot.

Also, shout out to Iglooghost, who has a new EP on the way. "Xcavator.03" is our first taste of it. And if you're looking for some of the wildest and most textured and odd experimental electronic music out there, you want to give this a listen for sure, especially in the wake of such a great full-length LP that came out last year, I believe, if I remember correctly.

All right, we also have a Fred Again.. teaming up with Skepta, who's on a bit of a run over here. A victory lap after rapping better than Joyner Lucas. Skepta's rapping better than Joyner Lucas. He surpassed the highest of bars, rapping better than Joyner Lucas, and now he's dropping another banger this time with Fred Again.. And yeah, "Back to Back" is the title. It's fun. It's got some cheeky bars in there. Great beat from Fred Again.. Cool that they've teamed up again. That's neat. Fred again and again.

We also have Doja Cat, new album cycle from Doja Cat. It's real. It's happening. First taste of it over here with "Jealous Type". And Doja Cat is also going '80s, also going '80s, doing a bit of a synth pop, a hardcore synth pop, maybe even slightly Paula Abdul thing. Great vocals on it. Of course, she also raps on it, too. Doja is versatile enough vocally to just be her own feature per usual. And yeah, it's just pure candy, pure fun, flirty, fun, catchy, enjoyable, neon-colored, with the '80s vibe, tiger print. I mean, that's the vibe. Although, again, Doja being as versatile as she is, typically, I don't know if this is going to be the whole new era or anything. I mean, there were so many different tracks doing so many different things on her last LP, and I imagine this new record, this upcoming record, is going to be a mixed bag as well to some degree. I don't foresee her doing a whole '80s album. I feel like that would be a bit much. But with that being said, as far as '80s synthpop revivalism goes, '80s vocal pop, that thing, '80s radio pop, she's checking all the boxes and fits into the sparkling leotard very well.

We also have Frequencies, new EP from The Dare. And there's a handful of tracks on here. It's an instrumental excursion. And "Modelizer" is the name of the cut that I'm pushing toward you guys. It's a very fun, funky jam. Give it a spin. Give it a listen.

All right, we have Spiritual Cramp, Rude forthcoming album. Second single from it, this one over here is titled "Young Offenders", and it is some rowdy fun, over-the-top punk rock that you're going to get all whipped up in. So give this one a spin as well. Very fun track. All right.

Carly Rae Jepsen. Emotion, anniversary expanded release is coming very soon. The favorite Carly Rae Jepsen record of many. And yeah, we're getting some extras, one of which is the song "More", and it's great. It's a really great track. I mean, it actually, in my opinion, is better than some of the core tracks of the album. But this is such a fire record from Carly. Of course, some of the extras from this era are going to be fire as hell, fire as well. So I don't know what else to say. It's a great track. Really excited for this expanded edition. Carly Rae Jepsen fans, rejoice in the comments. That's all I will say. All right.

Honey Don't! Motion Picture Films, Soundtrack, film industry, motion picture, film, visual, film, movie that I know nothing about... I know nothing about this other than there's a sick ass cover of "We Got to Get Out of This Place" on this soundtrack from none other than Brittany Howard. Who smashes it. Instrumental is very true to form with the original tune. Her vocal performance is absolutely fucking peak on this track. It's peak. It's a great cover. It's a killer cover. All right.

And finally, shout out to Anna von Hausswolff, who has a new record on the way as well. New single, the title of this particular track that I want to point in your direction of... it is a beautiful and intense dance ballad that not only has some wonderful sax work in it, but there's some beats that are like dub reggae influence in the second half that I thought were... If you had told me about this track in concept, I'd be like, no fucking way. But actually hearing it performed and hearing it done, I was like, okay, this is actually pretty awesome. "Stardust" is the name of the track. There's also a B-side, which is a very odd ballad and duet with Iggy Pop. And while I think Anna and Iggy, respectively, sound great on the song, their vocals together don't really meld all that well, in my opinion, but still, with that being said, it's an interesting collab and concept either way. And "Stardust" is a really beautiful, fire track. I think one of the best singles she's dropped in years. So there you go.

That's going to be it for the Weekly Track Roundup. Those are the tracks I'm pushing your way. Thank you very much for watching.
