Taylor Swift Fans Are Very Mad At Me...

Hey, everyone. It's Uncle Music, and it would seem I may have had a point or two about Taylor Swift. As recently, a Sabrina Carpenter song was used in a bit of anti-immigrant White House propaganda, and it took her little to no effort to instantaneously respond and denounce this usage of her music, to which there were a lot of positive responses and support.

Now, this is not to put Sabrina directly in competition with Taylor Swift because it's not about who is "more moral than the other person" or whatever. But in response to my recent video about Taylor's silence when it comes to the White House using her music to push their fascist agenda, I was met with so many responses and even a Twitter community note that disingenuously framed my video.

But I was also told Taylor fighting for the sanctity of the ownership of her music in this instance would be a bad thing, actually, and actually have detrimental effects, when in reality, it is literally the bare minimum I think we can ask for as people who are collectively together in arms, fans of her music, and also fans of not living under a fascist dictatorship.

I can't believe this needs saying, but yes: hateful, racist, xenophobic narratives about immigrants should be pushed back on at every point that it can be pushed back on. That is especially the case for artists whose music is being used to normalize these perspectives. Taylor Swift just so happens to be a significant example to talk about because of her fame, because of how historically she has stood on business when it comes to controlling her music because of the potential sway her opinion has in broader public discourse, and also for the firepower legally she would be able to bring in a legal situation if she did happen to bring the White House to court over this.

Ultimately, this has me wondering: what happened to great power coming with great responsibility? Because it seems like Taylor's fans want to have their cake and eat it too. They want her to be this special, stupendous, exceptional artist when it comes to her creative output. But then they want her to blend into the background and be no better than any other artist who has also had their music used by the White House when it comes time to make excuses for her.

I'm sorry, but you can't have it both ways.

What do you think?
