Good news. Spotify is being sued.
Not the first time, won't be the last. But in this specific instance, it's a class action lawsuit over their discovery mode feature, which makes allegations that it is, in fact, just a modern form of payola, which, of course, it is. Now, for anybody who might be younger and is not in the know and doesn't understand what payola is, it's basically a term that was coined in the days of radio in order to describe pay-for-play type promotions for songs and music that were to blow up certain artists on traditional media.
However, radio is not as influential today as it was decades ago. And now we have similar arrangements taking place, once again, on new platforms like Spotify, where artists and labels are agreeing to essentially give Spotify part of their streaming revenues monthly, annually, in order to receive preferential treatment when it comes to auto plays and algorithmic recommendations.
But on top of it, it is biasing the things that you're being on platforms like Spotify, to where the things you're being shown or recommended are no longer organic and are instead according to and prioritized on the basis of how much people are willing to pay to get in front of your eyes and ears.
But very interesting. Looking forward to seeing how this suit pans out.
