Hey, everyone. Anthony Fantano here, the Internet's unhappiest, most disappointed music nerd, coming to you as I really have to every once in a while and eat a bit of crow, even though I'm a vegan.
No, but seriously, it turns out a very recent review that I did that did some numbers, got some attention. I was wrong. I was clueless and out of my element, frankly, when it came to a video that I made recently on Tyler, the Creator's "Noid."
Again, being a subscriber of this channel, you most likely have seen or clicked on that Tyler review. You saw my take, you saw my assessment of the song/music video, and many of you wrote in the comments, pointing out just how wrong I was in that video. I saw those comments. I gave it a think. I sat with my take on that video a little bit longer, and I came to realize that you guys are, in fact, right. I just did not know what I was talking about there. And as a result, I'm going to have to just come on here and really just pull the take that I gave you guys because there really was just truly a grave oversight.
But, you know, as a reviewer, these things do happen. Wouldn't be the first time that I've had to rethink a take or anything that. So let me come on here and say what I need to say. I apologize. This is hard. Okay, this is tough. It's never easy to come on here and set the record straight. I do try to take pride in my reputation for being straightforward, being consistent, pulling no punches. But in my haste to cover this new Tyler, the Creator song and single, "Noid", I just was not at my best because I, in fact, messed up big time.
And I, in the music video, did not recognize the cameo appearance of actress extraordinaire, Ayo Edebiri. I actually really love, love, love, love, love the series of shots that you get jumping back and forth with this woman. Yes, that is in fact what I missed there. That's a big mess up on my part. I will ask for your mercy here, for your forgiveness. And just know that I don't watch a lot of shows or anything. I know she's been in some films that she has lent her voice to that I have seen. But I'm not a big Abbott Elementary guy. I'm not a big The Bear guy. I know those are very good quality, popular shows that I've seen some pretty funny clips on social media from here and there. But again, I'm not a very avid drama or a live-action comedy viewer or anything like that.
I will chalk a lot of my ignorance up to that shortcoming in my regular media diet. If you want me to name a bunch of obscure random albums that just came out, sure, I could do that, no problem. Or if you want me to name a bunch of random producers who part on a bunch of records, sure, I could do that sometimes, too. But yeah, not a big show watcher a lot of the time, unfortunately, and very terrible when it comes to the names of actresses and actors. A lot of that information, unfortunately, just does not really get retained in my mind. I apologize if you guys were led to believe that my professional expertise in the field of music extends into other mediums as well, for the most part, it really does not.
So yes, because of that, it is with a heavy heart that I have to come through here and again, apologize for the big mess up, the big mistake. Cultural commentators, reviewers, we can't get them all right all the time. Again, going back to that Tyler, the Creator, "Noid" review, Ayo Edebiri is not merely just this woman here popping up in the video to accost the first-person view, presumably of Tyler's protagonist character in that music video with a phone and also a gun. She is, in fact, a very accomplished, up-and-coming actress who is very talented and is involved in a lot of great projects.
Plus, when you think about it, this is all Austen's fault anyway. I haven't really had the Internet like that for the past year. So anytime I listen to an album or have to watch a music video, Austen passes it to me in the mail with an SD card. And foolishly, she sent me the Tyler video in one 140p, which, of course, I'm not going to recognize anybody looking at a Tyler, the Creator music video in 140p.
So yes, again, I admit I was wrong in my Tyler, the Creator review, and that is me correcting the record and my apologies. My apologies for being wrong in the review. But yes, I'm going to leave it there. If you can see your way to trusting me ever again, maybe you can't. And if that is in fact the case, I will not hold it against you.
Anthony Fantano. Ayo Edebiri. Forever.
