Albums I'm Excited for in 2025

Hey, everyone. Anthony Fantano here, the Internet's busiest music nerd. I hope you're doing well.

Let's make quick work of this. It's 2025, people, in case you haven't noticed. So far this year, we have a lot to look forward to. You know, like environmental collapse, total political and social anarchy.

Anyways, there are a bunch of album releases slated this year. Some have been formally announced with dates. Others are expected but very much coming. Then there are even more that, for the most part, we're all just holding out hope for.

And I thought I would go over a lot of those releases in this video here and just let you guys know what I'm personally looking forward to in 2025. Did I say 2024 earlier? I don't think I did. Did I? If I did, that's cringe. It's 2025, people.

All right, so here are the albums I'm looking forward to this year. Let's go.

One, Joey Bada$$. Guys coming through, talking a big game. I imagine with all that rapping and all that talking about there being too much dick-sucking of the West Coast and so on and so forth that the guy must have some music coming, right? He's got to have some music coming. I mean, how is he going to bring attention back to the East Coast without some frigging music? Come on, Joey. Let's get some music out here. Let's get some new music out here. Joseph, Sir Joseph with Bada$$.

I'm also very much looking forward to the new Darkside album, the Nicolas Jaar side project, which I believe is coming out on the 28th of February. It's titled Nothing, and there has been a few killer singles out from that record so far. It just sounds like this amazing meld of funk and house music and rock and just electronic music broadly. It really feels like touches of musically everything Nicolas Jara has done up until this point in his discography, so I'm pretty hype about that one.

I also wonder whether or not there will be a Chappell Roan album this year. You would hope that she's going to strike while the iron is hot, given that her 2023 album blew up so hard in 2024.

There has also been a lot of talk of a new Sky Ferreira record. Who knows if that's actually going to come to fruition?

But I think a safer bet as far as a new release this year is going to be Clipse, as Pusha T and his brother have been back together for quite a while now performing live shows, recording, and even Pharrell has been talking about his work with the duo. So the Clipse brothers back together with Pharrell in the mix as well is frankly going to be insane, possibly album of the year potential. Fingers crossed.

We also have the posthumous Mac Miller album, Balloonerism, which is set to drop on the 17th, a few days forward from the shooting of this video. And given how solid his last posthumous record was, and given a lot of this record has been leaked for a while, and on top of that, it sounds like it's from the era of music where he was Watching Movies with the Sound Off and GO:OD AM, which I think creatively is a pretty prime era for Mac. It should be a solid record for sure.

Also looking forward to the FKA Twigs Eusexua album. As far as I'm concerned, she has been really winning with all of the singles on that record so far. Sounds like a really dark, mystical exploration of dance and groove, and I am very much hype about it.

Are we going to see a Playboi Carti album this year? The goddamn music album he keeps teasing and never releasing.

Also, will there be a Chance the Rapper album, finally? Wasn't there supposed to be a mixtape in 2024? What the hell happened with that? Chance the Rapper, you just can't pull the trigger anymore. It's sad.

We also have a new Weeknd album dropping on the 24th, so we're eating this year pretty early when it comes to pop and RnB due also in part to the new SZA Deluxe album, but that's already out.

For the art rockers and art punkers out there, Squid has an album dropping on the seventh of February, which has had some solid teasers for sure.

Singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten is also dropping on the seventh of February with a full band. Seems she is really leaning into her rock era on this record, and that should be an interesting transition.

Lucy Dacus also announced some new stuff recently, which I'm pretty excited about given that there was an anticipation that after such a successful album run from Boygenius, that we were going to start seeing more Boygenius solo material. I do think Lucy is one of the more solid writers of the group, so very much looking forward to that.

Japanese folk singer and songwriter Ichiko Aoba, is dropping a record this year, which should be absolutely stunning and gorgeous.

We have a new spellling album coming on the 28th of March, and our first taste of that single-wise has been pretty thrilling given the epic, almost arena rock-like quality of that song.

We have a new clipping. album dropping in March as well. They have been embracing a lot of dance beats on their new singles.

Will there be a new King Gizzard album in 2025? They played it relatively quiet in 2024, so there could be potential for them to come back with a vengeance this year.

Panda Bear is also dropping in the first quarter of the year, and he is two for two with those new singles, especially that one with Cindy Lee.

Japanese Breakfast has announced a new record and released a very lush, beautiful short little single.

We have Lana Del Rey coming in May.

We have A$AP Rocky, hopefully dropping at some point this year. Thought it was going to happen in 2024. He just keeps pushing this album back again and again and again. I don't know if we could wait another goddamn year for this Rocky album.

We have new Kesha on the way, but we're not sure when we have new Lady Gaga on the way with the release of a new single that I thought was just all right. We haven't had the album release date become solidified quite yet.

Will there be Rihanna this year?

Will there be Frank Ocean this year?

Will there be Lorde this year? I hope so. She really needs to outdo that last record.

There's a new Richard Dawson album dropping in February, too. If you're into very left field singer-songwriters, you are going to want to check that one out, as well as every other album in his discography. Wake the hell up.

We have what is allegedly going to be the final - loud - Swans album to be released, at least for a while, maybe ever. That has been getting teased by Michael Gira through his social media.

We have Jane Remover. Actually, I believe Jane Remover will be dropping two albums this year. Exciting.

Also pretty hyped for a new Quadeca album in 2025, given how many interesting genres and fusions and experiments there were on his SCRAPYARD project and how epic and conceptual the album he dropped previous to that was. Who the heck knows what's in store? Probably something exciting.

Look, that's probably just the tip of the iceberg in terms of music releases coming out this year. I mean, after all, not too long ago, we were doing some coverage on this channel talking about how in a single day in 2024, more music was released than in an entire year in the '80s. And I'm sure we're on pace to outdo that output.

But yeah, at least for the first section of the year, these are the albums I'm looking forward to. Let me know down in the comments what albums you are hoping to hear in 2025. I am going to leave it there. You guys are the best.

Anthony Fantano. Albums I'm looking forward to in 2025. Music. Forever.
