Anthony Fantano: Luther Grandross! Yes, Luther Grangross is my new favorite artist. Thank you. Luther Grandross. Shout out to Luther Grandross. He was there in full effect. Luther Grangroce claiming his what? His 100th Grammy at this point?
Giggens: At least 100 Grammys.
AF: At least 100 Grammys. That man has more Grammys than anybody. Luther Grandross. Giggens, my beloved. Yes, Giggens is here. Giggens jumpscare.
G: Hi.
AF: You guys didn't expect Giggins, did you?
G: Great to be here.
AF: Yeah, we were chilling. I was like, we got to talk about these Grammys today.
G: Let's do it.
AF: I'm talking about them anyway, so let's do it together. Yes, as you guys know on this channel, we typically will go over the Grammy nominations and just talk about hopes and predictions, anticipations for the Grammys every year. And when those awards are ultimately given, I will then circle back and essentially talk about the winners and see how things panned out. I've seen some of the winners, some of the announcements, some of the pictures. I haven't seen all of them, so I figured it would be fun to, together, LIVE, basically come together and talk about these winners over here, these wieners. And see how it panned out. Let's scroll down.
Let's see. We are beginning off in the General Field with Record of the Year. You guys should know the picks at this point. You can see them on the screen, that's for sure. But yes, for Record Of The Year, it went with Kendrick Lamar and SZA, "Luther". "Luther" did it, "Luther" pulled it. I mean, it was one of the stronger tracks out of this bunch. Probably my favorite out of the bunch. So I mean, why the heck not? Why the heck not?
G: Beautiful song. Well recorded.
AF: Beautiful song.
G: Their energy is amazing on it together.
AF: Love SZA and Kendrick's chemistry on it. Love the way that they're able to play into the Luther, "Grandross" [Vandross] sample on the track. It's just such an impeccably executed song, not just from the writing, but again, just from the way that they work within the beat there. So no complaints there. No complaints there. And it was pretty strong competition for that field.
G: I mean, "Manchild" was in there.
AF: It's true. And "Manchild" is a banger. "WILDFLOWER" is cute, too. And I also did enjoy "The Subway". All right. Album of the Year. You can see the selections here. And you guys know, you guys know I was really pulling for Clipse, for Let God Sort Em Out. But it was, in fact, Bad Bunny that walked away with it. Bad Bunny walked away with the Album of the Year this year, which I think is a pretty significant statement given the state of the country and everything. And it's his best album to date, so I mean, why the hell not?
G: I'm glad he won.
AF: It was a thoughtful record, well-produced record. Best writing and performances on any Bad Bunny album so far. The backstory and the personal statements about diaspora and so on and so forth. It's a significant record, so no reason to be unhappy with that pick. There were certainly weaker albums that it could have gone to that I would have been pretty unhappy with. But yeah, Bad Bunny for an Album of the Year is not a bad pick at all. All right, we have Song of the Year, and that ended up going to "WILDFLOWER". Okay. Billie Eilish pulled it out for Song of the Year. There you go. And again, stiff competition between "Luther", between "Manchild", many of the same pics for Record of the Year. But there you go. "WILDFLOWER".
G: Some big songs in that one.
AF: Yeah, those are some big songs. All right. Olivia Dean got Best New Artist, which is interesting. I mean, probably... Yeah, I mean, I thought it might go to Sombr in this category, were you pulling for anybody in the best new artist category?
G: Not particularly. I do like that Olivia won. My other choice would have been KATSEYE, only because they've had such a huge impact, especially on a lot of TikTok. But I do like seeing Olivia Dean. You know, kind of a throwback sound, different. Seems like a really nice person.
AF: I'm liking her stuff, too, even though obviously I didn't really dig into her 2025 record. What I've heard in passing is very nice on the ears. However, the more popular she gets and the more this song of hers continues to dominate in the Top 10, the more Olivia Dean shade I'm seeing on the internet.
G: That's how it always goes. It's the "Geese" discourse at this point.
AF: I suppose. I mean, it's kind of different. A lot of people are saying her music's bland, 'who even cares, she's not even that interesting.' There's some people even going as far as to be like, 'she's setting feminism back because she's singing a song about how she's head over heels for a guy!' It's like, I don't know if that's the standard you're working from....
G: 'Feelings are stupid.'
AF: I mean, you're probably better off pointing that aggression toward Life of a Showgirl or something like that, if that's really what's miffing you. But with that being said, I feel Olivia Dean's a respectable choice there.
G: Yeah, good choice.
AF: Definitely the hottest blow-up of 2025.
G: Sure.
AF: She makes a very sweet, very smooth UK brand of pop soul. There's just something very UK about it. There's even elements of her instrumentals that remind me of bands like The 1975 right now.
G: It's comfortable on the ears. It's like a nice cup of tea, her voice and her vibe.
AF: All right, we have Producer of the Year, Non-Classical. Who did that go to? Oh, it went to Cirkut for the Lady Gaga, for the Coco Jones, the Bruno Mars, the Weeknd stuff, more Lady Gaga, JADE, Ed Sheeran. Interesting.
G: It's a lot of work.
AF: I mean, it's a lot of work. It's a lot of work. What the hell was that? It was a weird sound outside. I don't know what that was. Somebody pissed off that Cirkut won, apparently.
G: 'It should have been Dan Auerbach!'
AF: 'It should have been Dan! Why didn't Dan get it?!' I mean, honestly, I would have probably preferred to see it go to either Dijon or Blake Mills, but Cirkut's a decent choice. Again, put in a lot of work with a lot of popular tracks and a lot of popular artists this year, so it makes sense. All right. Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical. Who did that go to? Amy Allen for work with Bruno Mars, Sierra Ferrell, Jessie Murph, God... the Jessie Murph record is so bad. How are we getting awards for the Jessie Murph?
G: I got nothing.
AF: Tate McCrae. Okay, Sabrina Carpenter is in the mix there. That's good. But also Jon Bellion featuring Luke Combs... Okay, this is definitely not my high points of the last year as far as songwriting goes.
G: She co-wrote "APT." with ROSÉ and Bruno Mars?
AF: Yeah, that's what I'm seeing.
G: I thought that was mostly just Bruno. I'm shocked. Wow.
AF: Yeah, I don't know if this was my personal preference here, although, considering we have a songwriting competition including artists like HARDY and Jelly Roll, maybe this was the direction to go in?
G: It could have been worse, apparently.
AF: It could have been worse, I guess.
G: Oh, there's Tobias with "Relationships".
AF: Yeah, no, it's true. I mean, he was working with Bon Iver this year, apparently this past year. Justin [Bieber], who really needed a lot of help sounding alternative in 2025 with his Swag records.
G: He's got the guitar now.
AF: He's got the guitar. He's performing on stage in his underwear. If I can get any thoughts in chat on Justin Bieber, giving us a raw, intimate performance in his underwear with his loop station, I'd be interested in that. I would read some comments if chat had any thoughts on Justin Bieber's underwear performance. But yeah, there you go. Those are the main General Fields there. But moving on to pop and dance with electronic, has electronic always been, and dance, always been like looped in with pop in the same field? Wasn't it in its own field at some point? What the hell happened?
G: I couldn't tell you, man. I couldn't tell you.
AF: I feel like that change happened last year, and I was a little taken aback by it, and it's just weird to see it continuing. "It was whatever," says MegaSetGo [from chat] it really was whatever. It was whatever. There's not really any other way you could define it. Best Pop Solo Performance. Who did that go to? That went to Lola Young, "Messy". I mean, that's a fun song.
G: I think Charli [XCX] presented that for her, too.
AF: Nice. I mean, I personally prefer "The Subway" or "Manchild", but I mean, "Messy" is catchy. And I would think that if Lola Young was going to get an award this year, it probably would have been like, 'Oh, let's give her Best New Artist or something like that. Because not as established, whatever, a new face.' But that's huge. To get Best Pop Solo Performance during your breakout year is pretty massive. It's pretty massive.
G: She's been off for a few months. She's had a couple of rough goes doing some shows lately.
AF: Yeah, there's been some tough stuff about her recently in terms of the pressure. It's just further tribute to the fact that her blow up has been so intense and so sudden. And so sudden. And so quick in the last year.
G: A little "messy," if you will.
AF: Yeah. But really, hopefully this award makes it all worth it in the end. All right. Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Who did that go to? Magdalena Bay? Did that go to Magdalena Bay?
G: You can only wish, man.
AF: Went to Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, "Defying Gravity" from the Wicked Soundtrack. Okay, fine. Sure. If you want. Okay. But I suppose the... Oh, man, "30 For 30" was in the mix on this one?!
G: You're a "30 For 30" fan over "Luther".
AF: I'm a "30 For 30" guy. I fuck with "30 For 30" a little bit more.
G: Yeah, you've been doing that for a while now.
AF: "Chat! Should I fold this bitch no yoga mat? Chat!" That's such a great line. It's such a great line. There's so many great vocal stems in that track.
G: I would have gone "APT" I like that song. I know it's cheesy. It's been played out, but it's just fun.
AF: Yeah, I'm going to disagree with you there. But I would probably prefer that. I'm not a big musicals guy, so just tag my bias there. I gonna leave it there. Best Pop Vocal Album. Was it Swag? Was it Swag?! No, it was actually MAYHEM, Lady Gaga, which is fine. MAYHEM was pretty good.
G: Yeah, MAYHEM was good.
AF: I mean, the Bruno Mars track at the end made no fucking sense.
G: I think it was tacked on.
AF: It's just so tacked on. It's so tacked the fuck on.
G: It was hanging out.
AF: It was just literally hanging out...
G: It's on the record.
AF: ...there, for whatever reason. But I mean, MAYHEM is one of Gaga's better records in quite a while. Probably would have personally preferred to see it go to Miley. on this one because Something Beautiful was so good.
G: That's such an incredible album.
AF: And even the additional tracks like that jam with David Byrne is crazy.
G: She did a great record with that one. So either one of those would have been cool.
AF: Yeah. I mean, I'm glad it didn't go to AI Swims. No AI music. All right. Now we're just breaking balls. All right. Best Dance/Electronic Recording, because I guess that's in the same category now. Who did that go to? Who's the wiener there? Oh, "End of Summer", Tame Impala. Tame Impala. That's the sleepiest out of all of these. That's so sleepy. That's so sleepy. It didn't go to "No Cap"? It didn't go to "Victory Lap"? Okay, whatever.
G: No Fred.
AF: No Fred. No PlaqueBoy. All right. I mean, fine. If it makes you happy that the Impala is tame, it makes you happy.
G: I think they wanted one guy on stage.
AF: They didn't have room.
G: 'Did you know it's one guy?'
AF: I did know. I did know it's one guy. All right. Best Dance Pop Recording. Who did that go to? "Abracadabra", Lady Gaga. Wow! She's sweeping! Lady Gaga is sweeping, we're seeing a Gaga sweep.
G: The mayhem of sweeping!
AF: Mayhem's sweeping the nation!
G: She's sweeping the nation, Gaga style!
AF: Just, thank god it didn't go to an F1 The Movie, soundtrack song. I'm just going to say that. Just... Just going to say that. Soundtrack of the Year, the F1 Movie Soundtrack.
G: Honestly, I would have loved if PinkPantheress-
AF: -I was just going to say, "Illegal" would have been-
G: -That's such a huge song.
AF: -Crazy. "Illegal" would have been crazy.
G: That would have been great.
AF: But Abracadabra is a fun track.
G: And "Bluest Flame" is the best song on that Selena Gomez album, Charli [XCX] wrote it, so it's like...
AF: Yeah, but it didn't deserve it, though, still.
G: No. But "Illegal", that should have deserved it.
AF: Crazy, Dylan Brady's in the mix there, though, for that one. Very interesting. All right, Best Dance/Electronic Album, EUSEXUA. Oh my God. Yousexua, MeSexua?
G: We AllSexua!
AF: We're AllSexua now! Whoa, this is crazy. This is crazy. FKA twigs with a Grammy! For the album category!
G: I'm happy to see that.
AF: Yeah. No, it's a really good record. I mean, especially the revamped tracklist I thought was really good. Would have also been fire to see PinkPantheress get it, and I'm kind of surprised it didn't go to Skrillex given all of his industry hype, generally. But has he won Grammys before?
G: I don't know. Maybe back in the day.
AF: Maybe back in the day. Like 10, 15 years. I can't quite recall. Maybe someone in chat can verify on that. But yeah, Miley was slept on. I wholeheartedly agree.
G: I think PinkPantheress' time is coming big time. The next record, I think, is going to blow her up even more than this one.
AF: She's not going away. Her buzz just keeps fortifying more and more and more, and her fans, she just keeps making better and better work. All right. Moving on to Best Remixed Recording, Gesaffelstein, who I'm happy won that just to see him on stage in that insane god damn outfit.
G: That was nuts.
AF: That was insane. That was one of the craziest fits I've ever seen at any award show, red carpet, anywhere of all time, which is just such a funny thing to show up in, considering there were so many people going into this having no idea who the hell he is, not knowing this guy has been a famous, successful, connected European electronic music producer for over a decade now.
G: It's the classic American thing. If it's not from here, they don't know.
AF: Yeah, exactly. I mean, this guy's done work with Kanye, like back in the day, if I remember correctly. So this guy's been around. Really crazy for him to have this moment out of the blue here. That's really cool, frankly. So shout out to Gesaffelstein.
G: Maybe costume of the night.
AF: Oh, yeah. No, for sure. Absolutely. Right up there with Chappell.
G: Which we will be wearing on New Music Friday.
AF: Yeah, we're going to wear the Chappell Roan costume. We're having those tailored for us right now. We were like, whoa, it's not cheap at all. We were like, that's what we're going to wear on the next New Music Friday. We made the decision. All right, well, "holy aura farm. Bro bowed and just walked off stage." [from chat] It's true. Yeah. How do you talk in that?
G: He can barely breathe.
AF: You just got to Daft Punk it. All right, rock and metal! We're in the rock field y'all! We're rocking! Rock and rolling!
G: Rock is still a thing?
AF: Apparently, it's still here. Rock is still alive, believe it or not. Some people might... Skrillex has won nine Grammys. Crazy. Thank you for the verification there on the Skrillex Grammy wins. Man, he has so many. He has them in his cupboard now, his cups. He just drinks out of them. All right. Let's see who's in the Rock Performance category here. Who's in the rock performance here? I was really excited to see an Amyl and The Sniffers nomination, But it ended up going to YUNGBLUD?? YUNGBLUD?!?! WHAT?!?!?
G: His version of "Changes". It's not a bad version!
AF: If you want...the memories..."Changes"...
G: The feeling behind it.
AF: ...the feeling behind it.
G: He was friends with them.
AF: Yeah. No, it makes sense. It's fine. It's an Aussie year. He's a legend. I get the reasoning behind that. But I feel like it could have been Amyl or Hayley [Williams].
G: Either of those would have been fine.
AF: Either of those would have been my preference. Or even some tracks off of the new Turnstile have grown on me a little bit. So it was a pretty solid category this year. I'm just not a YUNGBLUD fan. I apologize. Best Metal Performance. Here we are. Oh, man, I haven't even finished reading. I'm so glad it didn't go to Sleep Token. I'm sorry. It's a premature celebration. It did not go to Sleep Token. Honestly, YUNGBLUD is so much more deserving than Sleep Token. I feel like I could handle YUNGBLUD every day. I'm totally... I'm YUNGBLUD fine...I'm YUNGBLUD...accepting. Would I rather YUNGBLUD take the country by storm or sleep token? I would rather YUNGBLUD. Who won? Turnstile! Nice! Wow! Turnstile eeped out a win on "BIRDS". Nice. Good for them. Fire. I saw a bitter-ass tweet this morning where someone was like, 'This must be one of those industry plants everyone's telling me Sleep Token is.' And it's like, yeah, 'Turnstile is an industry plant.'
G: Yeah, what? 10, 15 years now as a band?
AF: This hard core band has been around for a decade and is now on this legendary metal label who has 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify. The whole world is forcing you to listen to them, Turntile.
G: Can't stop listening to them.
AF: But cool for them. Cool for Turnstile. That's good. Best Rock Song, Trent Rezner, Atticus Ross. What was this for? The Tron thing?
G: Yeah, it must have been.
AF: Yeah. Did they do that for the Tron? Must be a thing that they did for Tron. Which I'm surprised didn't at least get a a little bit of an Oscar nod because it did seem like a pretty fire soundtrack, but the Oscars were probably not fucking with Tron.
G: I doubt it.
AF: Remember when Tron, Tronned?
G: I do remember when Tron, Tronned. But yeah, they won it over Sleep Token, over Hayley Williams, over Turnstile again, over YUNGBLUD. So I don't know. It's an okay pick, I suppose.
G: I've never even heard that song. I've played this soundtrack, and I still don't remember it.
AF: The whole soundtrack is just Reznor-coded.
G: I would have put Haley or Turnstile on that one.
AF: It's definitely more memorable moments there. Best Rock Album. Turnstile wins again?! It is dominating the rock category. They must have just put something... I don't really know. I know that the Grammys voting process is just very... They're not fully transparent with it, but obviously, a lot of previous winners vote, previous noms and winners vote. And then it's the academy themselves weighing out their own votes, and then what everybody else is saying. But I don't know. Even though this is not my favorite Turnstile album, they must have put something in this record that was just crack to their fellow musicians.
G: I think Glow On did a good job of getting them even wider audience, but this one really took off in a different way for them.
AF: They just leaned into what was working. With their last record, they obviously were fusing in all of these dreamy indie rock and pop influences with that baseline of hardcore and punk in their sound. That seemed to just expand their audience pretty massively, and they just did it a little bit more, and it seems to have opened even more people up to what they do. Makes sense. All right. Best Alternative Music Performance ended up going to The Cure. Nice. Isn't this like their first Grammy?
G: It's one of a few, maybe.
AF: One of a few? Okay. So it's like their first in probably years and years and years.
G: It's been a long time. Good job, Robert and the gang.
AF: Yeah. Shout out to Robert and the gang. I thought the likelihood of them winning would probably be pretty high given just the story behind the album and the comeback and everything. And it's been so long. And the record came out so good.
G: It is a good album.
AF: It is a good album. "It is first Grammy after 50 years." [from chat] Okay, so it's like...
G: It's the first one. Okay.
AF: So it's been- that was the first one, okay.
G: Solid list of other groups and artists with them, though.
AF: No, it was a lot of good competition in that field this year with Wet Leg and Hayley Williams and all that. All right, Best Alternative Music Album. Who won this? It was some good competition. The Cure won again.
G: Clean it up.
AF: Cure, cleaning it up. They're going to be crazy.
G: Cure for those Grammy blues.
AF: Interesting, Tyler [the Creator] got, again, nominated for this category, but for DON'T TAP THE GLASS. Which was a fun inclusion.
G: Was that his only DON'T TAP THE GLASS nom? Because Chromakopia, it was up for a handful of things, too.
AF: Yeah, I think it was the only DON'T TAP THE GLASS nod. But yeah, very stiff competition in this field this year, in my opinion. I enjoyed the vast majority of these records to some degree. Really all of them to some degree. Yeah. All right, R&B, Rap & Spoken Word Poetry, which, again, we're continuing to collapse all these categories together. Best R&B Performance went to Kehlani, "Folded". Very nice. That song has been doing so well on the charts. Talked about doing it recently. I even did a little tier list of what the top 10 songs were, and that, I think, ranked the highest out of all the songs, or was at least in my top three. I get the appeal behind that song. It's a very good song.
G: Interesting to put an NPR Tiny Desk version of... ["MUTT"]
AF: Oh, yeah. I don't think I've ever seen that before.
G: I've never seen that before.
AF: I've never seen an NPR Tiny Desk version song.
G: It's like, they have to start putting these out officially. There's a lot of boom.
AF: Right, that's the thing. You can't go on, like streaming and stream...
G: I saw this on YouTube.
AF: Yeah. Can you stream technically? Yeah. Especially since YouTube doesn't report to Billboard anymore. So I wonder if that changes anything at all. I don't know. I wonder how the nomination process goes from there. If there was any debate behind the scenes of anybody being like, 'You can't nominate a Tiny Desk performance!'
G: 'It's a video, you fool!'
AF: 'Of course you can! You can! I'll kill him! I'll kill him! If you don't let me nominate this!'
G: 'Tiny Desk or nothing!'
AF: Yeah, maybe we'll see more. More Tiny Desks getting... Yeah. I mean, the people at Tiny Desk got to be creaming. NPR is going to be like, Oh, my God.
G: Those desks right now, underneath those desks.
AF: Those desks are wet.
G: It's like Carlsbad Caverns down there.
AF: They're twerking on that desk right now. They're selling like a... What? Like a donation gift. They're like, 'We'll chisel off a piece of the desk for you.'
G: You can have a book from the shelf.
AF: Right. All right. But yeah, there you go, Best R&B Performance. Going to Best Traditional R&B Performance. Who's traditional? Leon Thomas, apparently, is measurably more traditional with the song "Vibes Don't Lie" than anybody in the regular R&B category, which I guess I do get that "Crybaby" song from SZA. It was a little bit of a throwback, which was cool. All right. Well, there we go. Leon Thomas went in that category. Best R&B Song, "Folded". Again, Kehlani going crazy. Kehlani 2025. And I believe in this speech, didn't she attack ICE? Wasn't that what she did when she was on stage, if I remember it correctly. I saw some clipse of that, which was cool. Shout out to her for that shit. And she's been quick to speak on Palestine more than some people have been over the past year, too. But there you go. Kehlani winning again. Best Progressive R&B Album, a category I've always felt weird about because we still don't know to this day what the heck makes it progressive and what doesn't. That ended up going to Durand Bernarr, Bloom. There you go. Over FLO and Terrace Martin, which again, the FLO thing confused me because FLO's whole thing is like a 2000s R&B throwback.
G: You're right. It's a old-school sound.
AF: I don't know. I mean, cool that they got nominated. They should be nominated somewhere. They're certainly talented, but the stipulation of this category just continues to confuse me. Best R&B Album, who did that go to? Leon Thomas. Leon Thomas. There you go.
G: Clean it up.
AF: Clean it up. And he's doing really well on the top 10 right now as well, at least last I checked.
G: Yeah, he's been in the top 20 for a while now.
AF: I actually don't think I even heard that Teyana Taylor record. There were some highlights on that, GIVEON, for sure, though. Best Rap Performance, who did that go to? "Chains & Whips"! Clipse! The first Grammy ever. First one ever. First Clipse Grammy ever. They finally did it. They finally did it. That's cool. They finally did it. Yeah, Billie Eilish did also go off on ICE, too. Yes. But there you go. "Chains & Whips" against "Anxiety". Oh, wait, I shouldn't sing it. I shouldn't sing it. I'm going to get-
G: You're too good at it.
AF: I'm going to get demonetized. "tv off", "Darling, I" with Tyler, "Outside" Cardi B. I mean, "Chains & Whips", personal preference there, so I'm not mad about it.
G: Solid list there.
AF: Best Melodic Rap Performance, that went to "Luther", another "Luther". Kendrick and SZA's walking away with Grammys on Grammys on Grammys on Grammys on Grammys with Luther Grandross.
G: Luther Grandross.
AF: Shout out to Cher.
G: Shout out to Cher.
AF: All right, Best Rap Song, "tv off". Another Kendrick win. Yeah. With Jack Antonoff on production. Go Jack Antonoff. Kendrick, he's tailor-made, like Drake says. There you go. And now he's got a Grammy for it, and Drake doesn't have any. All right. Best Rap Album. Who did that go to, huh? Who did that go to, huh? Who won Best Rap Album, huh? Let's find out. Oh, GNX. Whoa. Yeah, I mean, low-key, The Birds Don't Sing was robbed. I mean, I've gotten misty to that track live. "tv off" is hype, though. "tv off" is a hype track, though. But GNX wins again. I saw something, Kendrick has 25 Grammys now?
G: That's insane.
AF: Which is a crazy progression from the Grammys giving Macklemore an award over him. I feel like the Grammys learned their lesson. They're like, 'We cannot, we can't do that again, never give this guy a Grammy. We can't not do this.' 27 [Grammys]? Okay, crazy. 27... 27 is crazy.
G: Good for him. Holy smokes.
AF: 27 is crazy. Best Spoken Word Poetry Album that ended up going to Mad Skillz. I wasn't really following that category too closely.
G: I haven't played that one.
AF: Tbh. But shout out to Mad Skillz. Traditional pop. [Best Jazz Performance] That went to Chick Corea with Christian McBride, Brian Blade as well. Best Jazz Vocal Album. Samara Joy took that one away. Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Large Ensemble, Latin Jazz album... Was I? No, I wasn't following this category either. Now we're devolving. Now I'm like, what was I seeing and what wasn't I seeing? Oh, Laufey ended up winning in Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. Which is crazy.
G: Very good. Good job, Laufey.
AF: Well, there you go. Do you want to say anything as a Laufey defender?
G: I love that album. That was in my top 10 last year.
AF: You do love that album.
G: I love it. I thought it was adventurous for her. She was stretching out. Vocally, she was doing things she hadn't done before. There's moments that are rocking. I think it's a great album.
AF: I'm just glad it didn't go to Lady Gaga, Harlequin, because that was a nightmare.
G: Was that up there?
AF: Yeah, it's up there.
G: Oh, my God.
AF: "You'r a Joke-AH! You're a Joke-AH!" It doesn't literally sound like that, but it's close.
G: It's not too far off, but... Yeah, go Laufey, Laufey stan.
AF: Go Laufey. Best Musical Theater Album. Buena Vista Social Club, winner with the original Broadway cast. Okay. Okay. All right. Let's look at the Country and American Roots Music section. Chris Stapleton from the F1 Movie soundtrack, Best Country Solo Performance. No! With Tyler Childers right there?! And even Shaboozey?? Come on. Give me a break. We're really F1-ing the movie, these awards.
G: That album had such a huge push behind it when it came out.
AF: Best Country Duo/Group Performance. Shaboozey & Jelly Roll, "Amen". Oh, my God. Okay. Listen, I cannot wait for Jelly Roll to start talking politics. It's coming up. Next week- Get ready. Strap in, motherfucker. Next week, Jelly Roll is talking politics. You will not be ready for it. You will not be ready for it. He really should come out with a trailer. You know, just like, shoot a video, do some snippets of things he might be saying, but don't complete any sentences.
G: He's walking around with a suit jacket over his shoulder. He's got some things to say.
AF: 'He's been described as the most apolitical singer today. But finally, he's speaking his truth.'
G: It's just a little slow pan up. He's like, in front of a microphone.
AF: Let me write it. Let me produce it. Let me voice it. Throw Me A 100K. Okay? Yeah. All right. We'll pull it together. Best Country Song. Who did that go to? Yes! "Bitin' List", Tyler Childers! Hell, yeah. My guy. And that's my song, man. That's a crazy song. Everybody can relate. Everyone has someone they'd like to bite.
G: Yeah, sure.
AF: Even Jolly Roll.
G: Jeffrey Dahmer.
AF: Right. Everybody knows somebody they want to take a bite out of.
G: They want to chunk out of there. I really want to hear this, "Somewhere Over Laredo" now, because all I can hear is, "Somewhere Over Laredo" [sung to the tune of "Over the Rainbow"]. I really want to hear this song. I haven't heard this one yet.
AF: Somebody said, "Jolly Roll's speech was very cringe. I muted Jelly Roll," which I can always... I always admire people who protect their peace like that. I can't. Any horrible thing, I can't filter any of it. Whatever's coming at me, I just- I just soak it up. Any horrible. And I take a lot of psychic damage as a result of that. But there are some people who are like, I'm muting this. I'm not allowing this to invade my space.
G: Turn that TV off.
AF: I'm turning that TV off, as Kendrick said. I'm turning that TV off. Best Trad. Country Album, our boy Charley Crockett's in there. But it ended up going to Zach Top, Ain't In It For My Health. I don't think I heard this record. I don't think I heard this record. I got to try that out.
G: I've not heard of Zach Top. I've heard ZZ Top. I heard Zeezy Top.
AF: Yeah, maybe he's one of their grandkids.
G: Little Top.
AF: He's carrying the Top name down. And being Zach, he's a single Z.
G: It's just one Z. It's only one guy.
AF: Best Contemporary Country Album going to- Jelly Roll?! No, not Jelly Roll. This is when he talked about Jesus.
G: This is pre-country. This is pre-I'm going to talk about politics, by the way.
AF: Is this when... But he went up on stage and he's like, "Jesus, is for everybody. Everybody likes Jesus. Jesus is for you and for me."
G: Just imagine everybody, at the Grammys going, "No!"
AF: But with Tyler Childers right there with Snipe Hunter, clearly the better album, not loaded with generic slop instrumentals. And come on, man, give me a break. Like, Jelly Roll is not the singer that Miranda Lambert or Tyler Childers is.
G: Oh, God, no. Even Kelsey.
AF: That guy's records are as vocally touched up as any top-tier pop artist's record. It's just a shame.
G: I just can't get into his music. I've tried. It's just nothing for me.
AF: [Best Amrican Roots Performance] Mavis Staples is still out here killing it.
G: Good job, Mavis.
AF: Good for her. Hell, yeah. She's a freaking legend. To see her getting another Grammy. She's probably got a bunch at this point. Best Americana Performance, so it went to Mavis Staples, again. Best American Roots Song, "I'm With Her", Ancient Light. Did not hear that one, honestly, but I was aware of that category because Jason Isbell was nominated, but I wasn't particularly crazy about that album.
G: And Jesse Welles, he was up for a couple.
AF: Jon Batiste won Best Americana Album. Billy Strings got Best Bluegrass Album. He's very popular right now as far as anything bluegrass is concerned, so that's not too surprising, honestly.
G: No Molly Tuttle, though.
AF: Buddy Guy with Best Traditional Blues Album.
G: That was a great record.
AF: We have Robert Randolph with Best Contemporary Blues Album. I'm With Her again, Best Folk Album.
G: What's the difference between Contemporary blues and Traditional blues? There's only 12 bars to play with here.
AF: I know exactly. It's like, I don't know. You're really testing me in ways that I can't respond.
G: But, hell yeah, Buddy Guy.
AF: Hell, yeah, Buddy Guy. Okay, we're moving into the Latin, Global... God, you cannot... You're kidding me with all these things collapsing. So you're telling me Latin, Global, Reggae, New Age, Ambient, or Chant all in one field?!?! WHY?! It gets to a point. It gets to a point like we're either sub-categorizing and breaking down things that don't make sense, like, oh, progressive R&B, which why don't we have a progressive rock category? Why don't we have a progressive electronic, progressive metal? It doesn't make sense. It doesn't make sense. It doesn't make sense. But then when we're not sub-categorizing a million different ways, were like sub...lumping it together in Latin, Global, Reggae, New Age, Ambient or Chant. What's your favorite genre? Oh, me? I like Latin, Global, Reggae, New Age, Ambient or Chant. It's my favorite. That's where I'm usually listening to a majority of my music.
G: I like anything from Bad Bunny to like, monks.
AF: Yeah, it could be anything that lands in that spectrum.
G: Maybe even some Bob Marley, Enya, whatever.
AF: But Best Latin Pop Album going to Cancionera is fire because that's a killer record. Every record Natalia [Lafourcade] comes out with is great to some degree. Seeing her smash it in this category is great. She deserves all the accolades, all the awards, everything. Natalia Lafourcade, I deserve it all. Like, that song was written about her, essentially. Best Música Urbana Record went to Bad Bunny, getting another Grammy for Más FOToS, which is very cool. Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album ended up going to, what is it? CA7RIEL & Paco Amoroso. I've not heard that one.
G: I haven't played that one. I'll have to check that one out.
AF: All right, continuing on there. I haven't heard that Gloria Estefan either. Best Global Music Performance ended up going to Bad Bunny as well.
G: Cool. Okay. Clean up.
AF: Keen up for sure. And Tyla ended up getting Best African Music Performance, "PUSH 2 START". Nice. She's been going crazy, commercially, over the last couple of years. She's really been a sensation for sure. So that makes sense. Best Global Music Album ended up, let me see, going to another record that- I'm not familiar with this record, I think I might have heard some of the Burna Boy in this mix.
G: I got to expand my brain here.
AF: Right. I was not well-versed in the reggae section, category 66. Let me see. I wasn't digging too deep into the New Age or ambient. There's no miffle here.
G: Maybe next year.
AF: Maybe next year. Going into Field 8 over here. I don't know Tori Amos did a children's album this year. That's fire.
G: I had no idea.
AF: The Music of Tori and the Muses. Okay. It sounds like the thing where you have kids' renditions of your songs.
G: Like something They Might be Giants would do.
AF: Yeah. Except you have kids saying, "Why do we crucify ourselves?" I mean, toddlers should be singing that, honestly. They should be. Put some toddlers on to Tori.
G: We always used to joke around that there was a KIDZ BOP version of the Black Sabbath. Bunch of kids saying, "Oh, no, please God, help me!"
AF: Exactly. All right, we have a Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media. Ended up going to Sinners, which is definitely, in my opinion, this is the strongest-
G: Not the F1?
AF: No, not the F1 over here. I mean, KPop Demon Hunters has its bops, not a musical guy.
G: I'm surprised that didn't win.
AF: There were a lot of great songs and highlights and inclusions across the Sinners soundtrack. For a movie that wasn't literally a musical, it was a very musical movie. There were some great musical inclusions and performances in the film.
G: But no Timmy Chalamet.
AF: For A Complete Unknown, are you fucking kidding me? That would have been... I mean, some of his performances on the movie were cool, but others were rough-ish.
G: I still got to watch it. I just don't want to.
AF: You're not going to like it. You're really not going to like it.
G: I got Chalamet fatigue right now, man. He's everywhere, dude. I'm getting sick of it. I know he's talented, but come on.
AF: Yeah. Sinners got another Grammy over here. Am I wrong? No, yeah, yeah, yeah. Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media (Includes Film and Television). Sinners again. Another award, I'm sure. Cool.
G: Video games? Wow. Ok.
AF: Okay, wait. Sorry. The bold here was mixed up, so I got confused. Best Song Written For Visual Media ended up going to "Golden" for KPop Demon Hunters. That's valid.
G: It's valid. Huge song.
AF: It's a huge song. Top of the track. Fun song. I get it.
G: You had to win something.
AF: You had to win something.
G: It's the biggest Netflix movie of all time.
AF: And literally everybody in all of our lives who is sub-12 years old is talking about this movie to one degree or another.
G: Someone's watching it somewhere right now.
AF: Someone's watching it somewhere. I mean, probably thousands and thousands of people are watching it somewhere.
G: We have it on the background.
AF: Yeah, we're watching it. It's on the TV over there.
G: It's a giant big screen over here.
AF: We just watch it for inspiration. Best Music Video. Who won Best Music Video? Not "So Be It" from Clipse? That's sad. Ended up going to Doechii, "Anxiety". As much as I am an "Anxiety" supporter, people come for "Anxiety" and I rush in with clips loaded, both guns blazing, going," pow pow pow leave her alone!" I like that song. I do not mess with the music video.
G: I still haven't seen it.
AF: It's very...
G: I suck at music videos.
AF: There are people who say this in a loving way, but it's very much like musical number from a Disney comedy, like an OG D-com. Sure. Everybody's like, they break into a dance number and they're chasing each other and going down the street and all this other stuff. It's not the type of media I grew up enjoying. I see it and I'm like, this is not interesting to me. But for people that like those big elaborate, narrative, choreo numbers, I'm sure it's working for you. I'm sure it's doing something for you.
G: The more musical episodes of How I Met Your Mother.
AF: You want to know my vibe? I like the campiness of "Manchild" with the hitchhiking and the outfits. Fun video.
G: Hey, man, there's pigs there.
AF: Yeah, exactly. Or the black and white visuals with "So Be It", and it's creepy, and it's making me be like, 'Oh, these guys are creeping me out. What's going on? That Pusha T guy, he's such a surly character.' And then also, shout out to Sade for that song, "Young Lion", that she came out with just out of nowhere.
G: I haven't seen that one either.
AF: All right, Best Musical Film. Devo was in the mix over here? That's interesting. But it was Music By John Williams. I mean, John Williams is a legend. He deserves a film about his work and what he does. But I need to check out that Devo bit over there. I got to save that because it's-
G: It's a documentary, isn't it?
AF: I mean, probably. I've been a little bit on my book and documentary, a stint as of late. I saw the Daniel Johnston, The Devil and Daniel Johnston documentary.
G: I love that movie.
AF: Really?
G: It's about his life.
AF: It is, but also the more I watched it, the more I was getting an ick because I was like... I feel like the movie isn't explicitly saying or making it or calling out the fact that there is an inordinate amount of people around him who just seem to want to be around just to mooch off him in a way.
G: Oh, for sure.
AF: To be connected to his star.
G: There's always leeches.
AF: I mean, in the music industry, yeah, it's true. But it seemed even weirder or even more so the case, given that he's not fully aware of everything that's going on.
G: He wasn't well. Yeah, no, I agree. It's an interesting watch, nonetheless.
AF: It seems like there was a lot of people pushing him to do certain things without taking into account whether or not this is for his best.
G: Oh, yeah, 'Here, let's put you on a major label, buddy. Let's get a couple of records out there and go tour.'
AF: Or get you out there prematurely before you're fully well or whatever. Just putting him in situations where he's being minded by people who have no business making sure if he's okay. In that respect, it was very scary and very worrying and just made me feel incredibly bad. It's just, frankly, admirable that he survived through all of it, lived as long as he had and made as many records and made as much great music as he did. But moving on from there, Best Recording Package. Who did that go to? The Mac Miller record was really impressive as far as its packaging and art and layout. Ended up going to Megan Foley, Michelle Holme, art directors for the Bruce Springsteen, okay, got it, for the Tracks II: Lost Albums.
G: That giant box that they came up with.
AF: Yeah, it's a cool layout. Definitely, but looking at it and digging into a lot of the promo stuff around. It's like, 'oh, wow, I got this magic box of unearthed Bruce tapes no one's ever seen before.' Best Album Cover, which is the new category. This is new. They were just like, 'oh, man, what's the best album cover of the year?' Which you would think this is a category they would have. It's crazy that we got some of these other weird new category realignments and category subsections before even Best Album Cover was a thing.
G: This should have been a thing for years.
AF: Yeah, exactly. It should not be a new thing. But still, Chromakopia. Went to Chromakopia. I've already said publicly, I think there were way stronger covers than all five that were nominated, frankly, that dropped throughout the year, even including the new Tyler Childers' record, for example. But I'm glad they've started doing this.
G: Yeah, it's a good start.
AF: It's a good start. I'm glad they've started doing this as an album as an award. And hopefully, Tyler obviously does his own art direction, but hopefully this ends up putting some awards and some hands of cool artists who do great work because often they are unsung heroes for lots of different records. Looked over. That thing, yeah. Hey, man, you got to love some good album notes.
G: Are you on this one?
AF: Am I on this? I should be, right?
G: For your VU?
AF: I should be for the Velvet Underground liner notes that I... Ended up going to Mavis Staples, though. Shout out to Mavis Staples once again [The award actually went to Ashley Kahn and her album notes on Miles Davis' Miles '55: The Prestige Recordings].
G: Excellent.
AF: We had the Joni Mitchell Archives walking away with Best Historical Album. All right, those were our Grammys. Those were our Grammys Winners and Wieners. Hitting the applause. Those are the Winners and Wieners.
G: What a night.
AF: For the Grammys 2026. What a night. Justin Bieber in his underwear. Jolly Roll giving Jesus.
G: And politics, too.
AF: Clipse performed as well. But yeah, very cool. Very awesome. Very fire. Some good pics, some good awards, some good award picks this year.
G: Some good choices.
AF: So, yeah, I think that's pretty much going to be it. Giggens, thank you for accompanying me on this music, Grammys-winning adventure.
G: I think I missed this party. Thanks for having me, man.
AF: No, man, you'd never miss it. Not for the world.
G: I wouldn't miss any parties with you involved.
AF: Thank you very much, Chat, for being here.
G: Thanks, Chat.
AF: You're the best, you're the best, you're the best.
What do you think?
