Yusuf / Cat Stevens has announced he is releasing a memoir. Cat on the Road to Findout will hit bookstore shelves on September 18 in the U.K. via Constable and later on October 7 in North America via Genesis Publications.
Cat on the Road to Findout is expected to detail the British folk artist’s early beginnings, sudden rise in fame, and eventual renouncement of this title, in favor of devoting himself to Islamic faith and music. It appears the memoir will also include art by Stevens, too: “Cat on the Road to Findout unveils the untold chapters of Yusuf’s remarkable journey, illustrated with dozens of drawings in his own hand and archival imagery, self-penned with raw honesty and poetic insight,” a press statement reads. “The long-awaited memoir invites readers to a rare glimpse into the soul of a man who has lived multiple lives in one.”
In a press statement, Yusuf / Cat Stevens further described the grand scale his memoir will illustrate:
“I’ve been on an amazing journey, which began in the narrow streets of London, and led me through the most iconic cities, to perform upon the great stage of Western culture, ascending the dizzying heights of wealth, recognition and artistic pinnacles; freely exploring vast ranges of religions and philosophies, wandering through churches, temples, all the way to the Holy abode in Jerusalem — ignoring myths and warnings — and crossing the foreboded, desert heartlands, to arrive at the House of One God in Abrahamic Arabia. What finally elevated my perspective was a luminous Book that perfectly alchemized my thoughts, beliefs, with human nature. It taught me Oneness, and my place and purpose within the universe.”
Yusuf / Cat Stevens, 76, began his career in the 1960s as a folk artist, releasing albums like Tea for the Tillerman, which includes the song “Wild World”. In 1977, Yusuf converted to Islam and went on hiatus for 17 years. He eventually returned in the 1990s and dedicated his career to creating nonsecular music as Yusuf Stevens. Since 2017, he now goes by the stage name Yusuf / Cat Stevens, and has been steadily releasing secular music since 2006.
The artist released his first memoir, Why I Still Carry A Guitar: The Spiritual Journey of Cat Stevens as Yusuf Islam in 2014 and that same year, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He released King of a Land, his latest album of children’s music, in 2023.
