YouTube reaches new content deal after pulling music videos by Nirvana, Green Day, Adele and more

Iconic music videos from Nirvana, Kendrick Lamar, Adele, Green Day, Mariah Carey and many more have been pulled from YouTube in the midst of a legal copyright dispute between YouTube and the performing rights organization SESAC, the Society of European Stage Authors and Composers. SESAC oversees the catalogs of over 30,000 American artists.

Hundreds of videos have been taken down, with U.S. users getting the message “This video contains content from SESAC. It is not available in your country” when attempting to play one of the videos. A YouTube spokesperson said that they were in negotiations with SESAC to get a deal done, but it wasn't done in time. This explains why so many videos have been pulled from the platform recently.

However, there have been new positive developments. The Team YouTube account on X said that YouTube has now reached a deal with SESAC, and the music videos that were suddenly taken down will come back to the platform in the next few days.

It's good news for all. Music videos are some of YouTube's most popular kind of videos, with several videos that were pulled having staggering view counts, up in the billions. If you need your music video fix right now though, live videos are still on official channels, so you can check those out in the meantime. An example is Nirvana's legendary MTV Unplugged set in 1993.
