Atlanta rapper Young Scooter, who was signed to Future and Waka Flocka Flame's label, died at 39 on his birthday, March 28, after running from law enforcement.
Variety confirmed the rappers death with the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office, who said he was transported by emergency medical services to the Grady Marcus Trauma Center in Atlanta.
The 39-year-old rapper died after injuring his leg while jumping two fences, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. A medical examiner revealed April 2 that Bailey died after suffering "a penetrating injury" to his right thigh after coming into contact with "fencing material and/or woody debris" outside his home, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office.
Scooter, whose real name was Kenneth Edward Bailey, developed quite a name for himself in the Atlanta rap scene and was one of the first artists signed to Future's Freebandz label and later Waka Flocka Flame's Brick Squad Monopoly imprint under Gucci Mane's 1017 Records.
He worked with a number of artists like Young Thug, Juicy J, Rick Ross, Kodak Black, Juice Wrld and Future, the latter duo helped him score his first Billboard Top 100 appearance with a feature on their 2018 song "Jet Lag".
On Tuesday, Atlanta police arrested Demetria Spence on a bond totaling $7,500 for a warrant charging her with transmitting false public alarm (critical infrastructure), according to an inmate search on the Fulton County Sheriff's Office website.
The sheriff's office said a woman, later identified as Spence, called 911 and reported shots being fired and a woman being dragged into a home on William Nye Drive in Atlanta.
Bailey and another man ran from the home when police arrived at the location, and officers said they never found a woman who said she was dragged or any indication that shots were actually fired.
Audio of the 911 call was released to the public Monday, and Spence was identified as the caller, according to police. A transcript, transcribed by The Needle Drop, is below:
"There is literally a whole domestic dispute going on. This girl doesn't have on any clothes. They threw her outside. He was fighting the girl. He literally fought the girl. I'm not sure what they was fighting over, if they were fighting over drugs. That's what it sounded like."
Two men ran from that house when police arrived to check on the 911 call. One of the men, identified as Bailey, cut his leg on a piece of fence and died at the hospital.
Officers said they never found a woman who was dragged or that any shots had been fired. They released the 911 calls on Monday hoping to identify the caller and identified her as Spence on Tuesday.
The Bailey family released a statement, via WSB-TV:
“We are completely devastated by the loss of Kenneth “Young Scooter” Bailey and are currently still waiting for more information to understand the circumstance. Young Scooter was more than just a hip hop artist he was a phenomenal father and mentor to a lot of Atlanta youth pursuing both sports and music. Scooter was their advocate and support system. He always encouraged his children and the youth to pursue their dreams no matter what. The family is grateful for the outpouring of support and love from the city and all over the country. At this time ,they are requesting privacy and prayers as they grieve and wait for answers.”
