William Tyler and Four Tet announce debut collab album '41 Longfield Street Late ‘80s', release 11-minute Lyle Lovett cover

Two summers ago, guitarist/composer William Tyler and electronic artist Four Tet (Kieran Hebden) released the 12" "Darkness Darkness / No Services". It appears this partnership bore more fruit, as the duo has now announced debut LP 41 Longfield Street Late ‘80s, due out September 19.

With that news comes the first taste, which is an 11-minute instrumental rendition of Lyle Lovett's "If I Had A Boat".

Listen below:

Tyler and Hebden met at Bonnaroo Festival back in 2013 and kept in touch since. "The plan was to get into a studio together, which we managed in early 2022 in Los Angeles at Sargent Recorders where my friend Sam (Floating Points) had just made his album with Pharoah Sanders [2021's Promises]," Hebden recalls.

In the early going, the duo riffed on a mutual admiration for Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Fennesz, and AM oldies radio stations. But more eye-opening common ground was found in 80's country and folk music from America, specifically artists like Lyle Lovett, Nanci Griffith, and Joe Ely.

This mutual love is expressed quite literally, as Hebden explains, in the first track unveiled for the album."“If I Had a Boat” was the most literal pull from this ‘80s country sound. We also recorded long improvisations around chords, patterns and tones from songs we remember from growing up."

William Tyler, who released his latest LP Time Indefinite on April 25th, had the following to say about his collaboration with Hebden:

"Fast-forward to March 2022 and Kieran and I went to Los Angeles so that we could actually work on tracks together in person – after almost two years of talking about it. Like any great Los Angeles experience, the studio itself had layers upon layers of history, including all of the collectible gear. I never really thought 'Oh, we’re gonna have this album done by a certain point.' I just knew that when Kieran felt like it was done, it would be done. ... I think we both in our own specific ways want to recontextualize a lot of music that we grew up with, regardless of the genre, and I think that’s what this album reflects. It’s a lot of nostalgia but it’s also very forward focused. I don’t even know what genre I’m supposed to be in at this point, but I trust Kieran and I love what we’ve done together. He’s become a dear friend and I can’t wait to see what’s ahead for us.”
