Will Smith has officially announced his upcoming album, Based on True Story, which will mark his first studio album in two decades. The new album follows Smith's last record, Lost and Found, which was released way back in 2005. Alongside the announcement comes a new video for “Beautiful Scars,” featuring Big Sean.
In a nod to the Matrix franchise, Smith's social media post accompanying the video features the line, "Mr. Anderson and Mr. Smith welcome you back to the simulation." In the visual, Big Sean takes on the role of Morpheus, originally portrayed by Laurence Fishburne, while Smith embodies Neo, famously played by Keanu Reeves, apparently after being turned down by Smith, a fact that he drops on you a few seconds into the video.
The video then continues with Big Sean interrogating Smith, presenting him with a red pill that symbolizes the choice to continue his current life or to embark on the path of the Matrix. During the exchange, Sean references Smith’s previous career decisions, including the notable Oscars incident, before Smith decides to consume both the red and the blue pill. The visuals then shift to Will Smith delivering his verses, interspersed with scenes showing his preparation for a role in The Matrix.
In addition to “Beautiful Scars,” Smith has released other tracks, including “Work of Art,” featuring his son Jaden, and “You Can Make It” with Fridayy and the Sunday Service Choir. The album Based on True Story is set to drop in March and serves as Smith's first full-length project since 2005's Lost and Found.
