Neil Diamond is opening the vault. On May 8th, via Capitol/UME, the legendary singer-songwriter will release Wild at Heart, a 10-track collection of previously unreleased songs from his sessions with producer Rick Rubin that originally fed into 2008’s Home Before Dark. This album marks the last installment of Diamond’s collaboration with Rubin, following 2005’s acclaimed 12 Songs.
To give fans a taste of what’s coming, Diamond has shared the album’s title track, captured in a video from the original sessions nearly two decades ago. With its acoustic warmth and folk-tinged melodies, the song is classic Diamond:
Reflecting on the project, Diamond called their partnership “a labor of love” and expressed excitement that these tracks are finally seeing the light of day. “I’m so gratified that these songs will finally be set free into the world to complete our trilogy of work,” he said.
The announcement comes with a trailer showing Diamond and Rubin back in the studio, reminiscing about the creative process. “You wrote a lot of songs in a brief window there,” Rubin notes. Diamond chuckles, “I couldn’t stop myself, it was a good feeling. I was living with these songs for about a year. They were part of my everyday life.”
Though Diamond’s recent years have been quieter due to health concerns, he hasn’t slowed down his celebration of a storied career. His music inspired the recent musical drama Song Sung Blue, starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson, which follows a Neil Diamond cover band on a cross-country journey. Meanwhile, Broadway audiences have been treated to A Beautiful Noise, the jukebox musical chronicling his life and hits, which debuted in 2022.
For fans of Diamond, or anyone who loves heartfelt songwriting, Wild at Heart promises a chance to rediscover a timeless voice in a fresh, intimate way.
