In celebration of The Blue Album’s 30th anniversary, Weezer is releasing “the most comprehensive vision of The Blue Album ever created,” complete with 36 unreleased tracks and a knit sweater fit for romantic destruction.
This extensive offering of Weezer’s earliest demos plays out across four 12-inch LPs, one ten-inch EP, and one 7-inch vinyl, along with a completely remastered version of The Blue Album. The collection gathers live recordings from sessions at Loyola Marymount University, the BBC, and 22 band practices - including the earliest known recording of “Undone - The Sweater Song” - check it out here:
The new collection comes in various formats, all available for pre-order through Weezer’s website. Three decades of buried music was unearthed alongside a collection of never before seen photos. A 24-page, full color issue of Weezine #18 - restored and reprinted by the band’s archivist, Karl Koch - also comes in the Deluxe Vinyl Edition. Among this version’s other goodies are 4 lithographs, a poster, a song-themed sticker sheet, a 12-sided die (for all those fans still In The Garage), and an enamel pin. A 3-CD version will also include the aforementioned collectibles.
As of this article’s release, the Super Deluxe Vinyl Box Set has unfortunately already sold out, with only 100 lucky fans nabbing the real-deal, sweater-wrapped edition. For everyone else, the 30th Anniversary songs will be made available for digital distribution.
In June, the band warmed up to this celebration by releasing a live, 4-song Spotify session, including “Buddy Holly”, “Undone - The Sweater Song”, “Say It Ain't So”, and “Surf Wax America”. Their official website has a full statement about the anniversary, including a trip down memory lane that describes their surprise with The Blue Album’s initial success:
“On May 10, 1994, DGC Records released “Weezer”, the self-titled debut album by Weezer. The story has been told and re-told many times, but the crux of it was that no one thought it would do very well, even though all the band and the band’s small inner circle felt they’d made a really good album. The assumption was that people would say “who?” and laugh at the audacity of a new band putting out a debut album on a major label, with no fan base, no single out, nothing. “
Weezer is kicking off their Voyage To The Blue Planet Tour at Saint Paul’s Xcel Energy Center today 9/4, with dates taking them all across the US through October. They will also be joining Keanu Reeves’ band Dogstar to play the Blue Album in full on March 15, 2025 at the Lodge Room in Los Angeles. All of this comes on the heels of their UK tour with the Smashing Pumpkins, as the band leans into the legacy of their beloved first album and heads throughout the country in full celebration.
The band will be joined by The Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr. at every stop in the United States - sure to please every fan of that early-90's goodness.
