Long-running Australian radio segment "Like a Version" has provided us with a lot of classic and surprising moments over the years – Julia Jacklin taking on The Strokes or girl in red’s recent version of Billie Eilish’s “Lunch”, for example – and, in this week’s edition, British singer/songwriter Griff puts her own unique spin on Charli XCX’s Brat track “Apple”.
Watch the performance below, complete with a go at the now-notorious “Apple” dance:
Griff also performed a version of her own track, “Anything”:
Speaking to the triple j radio station in a behind-the-scenes interview, Griff expressed her admiration for the “cultural movement” of Brat, saying:
“As a fellow female pop girl, I love it. I’m a big fan of it. I think pop can be so saturated with the usual, same-old lyrics but when you listen to ‘Apple’ you’re a bit like ‘hang on a second’, and then you listen to it again and you realise there’s more layers to it… I just think she knows how to be an artist, she doesn’t seem like she cares about what people think really in a sense that she just does what she wants to do. There’s such a style and a uniqueness to Charli’s writing and attitude that I love.”
Griff will soon head out on the North American leg of her Vertigo World Tour, starting 13 September in Washington, DC:
Griff recently guested on a track by Danish popstar Christopher. Watch the lyric video below:
