Victor Willis, one of the members of disco group Village People, has announced that he will take legal action against any news outlet that dubs the band's hit "Y.M.C.A." a gay anthem, effective January of next year.
President-elect Donald Trump has made a point of using the hit at several campaign rallies, dancing along to the track. Willis vocally expressed support for Trump's usage of it via a Facebook post, and shut down any suggestions that "Y.M.C.A." might be a pro-LGBTQ track.
"[That's] a false assumption based on the fact that my writing partner was gay, and some (not all) of Village People were gay, and that the first Village People album was totally about gay life," Willis stated, before adding "get your minds out of the gutter."
Willis also disclosed that, while he initially ordered Trump to stop using the song at rallies, he realized that "the Trump campaign knew they had obtained a political use license from BMI and absent that license being terminated, they had every right to continue using 'Y.M.C.A.' And they did."
Trump "seems to genuinely like 'Y.M.C.A.' and he's having a lot of fun with it," according to Willis, so don't expect it to vanish from his public appearances any time soon.
