Following a lawsuit in which the major record label, Universal Music Group (UMG), accused generative AI music company Udio of copyright infringement, the two companies have now announced via press release that they will be working together moving forward.
Their "new platform," which they say will release in 2026, will implement music licensed by UMG for AI training purposes, with all included artists being financially compensated.
Udio CEO Andrew Sanchez claims that this collaboration is "uniting AI and the music industry in a way that truly champions artists. Together, we’re building the technological and business landscape that will fundamentally expand what’s possible in music creation and engagement."
While this agreement marks a major chapter in the world of AI music, this is not UMG's first time dipping their toes in the industry. As noted in the press release, UMG has already made "AI-related agreements" with Youtube, TikTok, Meta, and more.
For the time being, Udio's generative music software will remain within compliance of copyright laws until the platform launches next year.
