Universal Music Group cancels Grammy events, diverting resources to wildfire relief

Major label conglomerate Universal Music Group announced Monday that they will be cancelling all of their Grammy-related events, including their Artist Showcase and Grammy afterparty.

In lieu of these events, the money and resources that would have been used will be diverted to assist in relief for victims of the Los Angeles wildfires.

In the statement, they say,

"L.A. is home to so many of us. We are committed to helping and supporting the music community, our artists, our teams and the people of Los Angeles get through this horrific episode."

This announcement closely follows the Recording Academy's confirmation that the Grammy Awards ceremony on February 2nd at Crypto.com Arena will go on as scheduled in spite of wildfire-related concerns. The statement from Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. mentioned "This year’s show, however, will carry a renewed sense of purpose: raising additional funds to support wildfire relief efforts and honoring the bravery and dedication of first responders who risk their lives to protect ours.”

Many other ancillary Grammy events have been cancelled in the interest of respect and freeing up hotel spaces for those displaced by the wildfires. This is the third time in five years that the Grammys have been affected by world events, with the 2021 and 2o22 ceremonies being significantly postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic causing logistical obstacles.
