Eugene Hutz of Gogol Bordello has announced the release of a new compilation titled NYContinuity Vol.1: New New York Does Old New York, slated for April 4 through Casa Gogol Records. The compilation features contemporary New York City artists, alongside some established names, interpreting classic tracks that have shaped the city's sound.
Hutz, who arrived in New York City in 1997, reflected back on his experience, stating,
“Arriving in NYC in 1997, I no longer felt like a marginal freakaholic. The city took me under its wing, picked me up, and pinned me straight into the lineage where I belonged.”
He also mentioned the project's goal of capturing and maintaining the essence of New York City’s distinctive influence, which, according to him, provides a framework for global trends over the next couple of decades.
The album showcases a variety of artists, including Puzzled Panther, which features both Hutz and Brian Chase of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, taking on Sonic Youth’s “Dirty Boots.” The compilation also features tracks like “Fast Money Music” by Pons, revisiting Suicide’s original, and a collaboration between Hutz and Karen O. Additional covers include Joy Division’s “Isolation” by Hutz and drummer Steve Shelley, as well as Crazy & The Brains’ rendition of the Teddybears’ 2006 song featuring Iggy Pop.
The first track released from the compilation is Grace Bergere’s cover of “All Tomorrow’s Parties” by The Velvet Underground, featuring guitarist Thurston Moore.
To promote the album, a record release event will take place on April 5 at Bowery Ballroom, featuring live performances from an array of artists, including Puzzled Panther, Grace Bergere, Mary Shelley, Pons, DJ Hutz, and Freak Mods. Special guests will include The Yagas, a group that features actress Vera Farmiga.
