Meg Remy's experimental pop project U.S. Girls have announced their new record. Scatch It, the band's first since 2023, is out June 20 via 4AD. The band has also shared the first single from the record, the 12-minute "Bookends", which comes with a Caity Arthur-directed visual.
Watch and listen below:
"Bookends", according to a press release, takes its inspiration from a particularly personal source: the passing of "former Power Trip frontman Riley Gale," and ruminates on it "through the lens of Remy’s reading of John Carey’s Eyewitness To History, a historical collection of 300+ eyewitness accounts of great world events spanning twenty-four centuries."
All of this led Remy to deciding "there is not a hierarchy to suffering, and death is the great equalizer."
Scratch It was recorded live with minimal overdubs, seeing Remy moving away from the more slick electronics of recent releases. She worked alongside Jack Lawrence (The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs, Loretta Lynn) on bass, Domo Donoho on drums, and both Jo Schornikow and Tina Norwood on keys, as well as harmonica legend Charlie McCoy (Elvis, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison).
Remy and co. will also be going on tour, with the dates listed below. More dates are promised, and Remy also has announced a special one-off show Soft Junk in Nashville on Wednesday May 14, where she'll play the record live with a band on stage for the first time.
