Tune-Yards, the experimental indie rock duo of Merrill Garbus and Nate Brenner, have officially announced a brand new record. Better Dreaming, the band's sixth studio album, is out Mat 16 via 4AD.
With the news comes first taste, "Limelight", which arrives with a Jayla Smith-directed video. Watch/listen below:
On the new song, Garbus says:
"This one almost didn’t make it onto the album because it felt trite, especially given multiple genocides across the globe and the particular impact on children (the kids are not ‘alright’). But it kept coming back as people kept responding positively to it, in particular our own kid. Who am I to talk about getting free, about us all getting free? Fannie Lou Hamer said, 'Nobody’s free until everybody’s free' and it feels vulnerable but important to see myself as part of that ‘everybody’."
According to a press release, the song had its start with Garbus and Brenner dancing with their young child to George Clinton music. Their child's voice can be heard on the cut, as well.
Unlike much of their recent material, Better Dreaming – the followup to 2021's sketchy. – was created mostly as just a duo, as opposed to inviting in extra musicians. For example, they used some of the same looping techniques Garbus used more prominently on older TY releases, which were traded for more electronics and live drums on recent projects.
To celebrate the album, Tune-Yards will be heading out on an "intimate" set of shows. The short stint will take the duo across the Northeast in May.
