Arkansas-based bummer folk project Graveyard Lips, spearheaded by singer-songwriter Troy Bennett, has unveiled its latest single and video, "Behind Us Now", a poignant reflection on transformation, sobriety, and letting go of dead weight.
Formed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the band describes itself as "just a sad dude making bummer folk with a couple of close friends and some new ones too." But behind the modest tagline is a deeply felt body of work that includes several singles and their 2023 full-length, (Bare)Ly Existing.
Of the new song, they say:
“This single is definitely an epiphany from my move from LA to AR and my sobriety that has led me to leave some very toxic thoughts and habits behind me,” said frontman Troy Bennett. “I want this song to be a message to folks that it’s never too late to heal.”

Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Jason Tedford (Juscifer, Terminal Nation), the stripped down song comes with an animated video illustrated by Sabrina Nichols, who has worked with artists like Dinosaur Jr. and others.
The single itself can be purchased via the Graveyard Lips' Bandcamp page, where it joins the band's collection of introspective offerings, and the video is below:
Bennett, most known for being the frontman of Louisiana death metal bands Barghest and Faustian, plans to tour as a full band later this year, culminating with a double-duty appearance for both Graveyard Lips and Faustian, in September at What's Left Fest in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

On the topic of why he decided to write such sad songs, Bennett says it's always been within him. "It's always been in my heart," he says. "During the pandemic, I made the decision to record some songs I had been sitting on for a while. After that, and realizing I enjoyed it, I decided to keep the ol' sad train rolling."
