Tori Amos thanks Courtney Love and references herself on stark new single "Shush"

Following last month's "Stronger Together", a hopeful duet with her daughter Tash that provides the penultimate chapter in her upcoming concept album In Times of Dragons, Tori Amos is back with second single, "Shush", that brings us right back around to the start of the narrative, where things get decidedly murkier.

Conceived as an allegory for the diabolical state of our current political climate, where corporations, billionaires, and dirty politicians are heralding a fresh new hell on pretty much a daily basis, In Times of Dragons starts with a fictionalized version of Amos awaking to her own lost soul and escaping the clutches of her "lizard demon" billionaire husband ("an embodiment of unchecked power and concentrated wealth, his reach extending into the highest levels of political life").

Listen below:

With references to the Greek mythological figure of Cassandra, the princess of Troy who was cursed to always be right but never believed, Amos seemingly uses the uneasy "Shush" to comment obliquely on everything from the rampant misogyny of the manosphere to the Epstein files.

There are a few not-so-oblique references too: the Peter Thiel quote “I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible" is cited in the lyrics, plus there's an unexpected thank you to Courtney Love alongside a mention of Hole's iconic Live Through This album. If you know your history, back in 2005, Love was one of the first people to make a public statement warning women about the monstrous Harvey Weinstein, so it's not completely out of the blue.

There's an even earlier call back in the lyrics, a gut punch reference to Amos's own song "Silent All These Years", which kicks off the narrator's search for her fire of old.

After months of speculation among fans, Amos recently revealed the official tracklist for the 17-song album, which includes the last-minute addition of "Ode to Minnesota".
