Todd Snider cancels tour, claiming he was "violently assaulted"

Dan Weiss

The great alt-country/folksinger Todd Snider is no stranger to controversy — he sent up a good portion of the country audience on 2004's "Conservative Christian, Right-Wing Republican, Straight, White, American Males," to say nothing of his George W. Bush excoriation "You Got Away With It (A Tale of Two Fraternity Brothers)" or his Occupy Wall Street-era indictment "New York Banker."

The 59-year-old just released a new album, High, Lonesome and Then Some in October, and had made it just two stops in the accompanying tour when things took a turn for the imploded. A statement posted to the singer's social media accounts claimed he had been "violently assaulted" outside his Salt Lake City hotel and that he "sustained severe injuries." The rest of the tour is apparently canceled.

News outlets have since reported that the singer was arrested on Sunday, when he claimed to have been wrongfully discharged from Holy Cross Hospital. An affidavit states that he began "yelling and cursing at the staff" and returned after a medical professional asked him to leave. According to reports, he left and returned, threatening to kick a staffer's "ass," and was booked into Salt Lake County Metro Jail after. He was booked for suspicion of criminal trespass and threat of violence (both class B misdemeanors), as well as disorderly conduct. Snider hasn't yet commented on his arrest, but you can read his original statement in full about being assaulted below.
