In the lead-up to the Christmas Day release of A24's Marty Supreme, certified movie star Timothée Chalamet took part in an 18-minute video breaking down potential marketing ideas for the Josh Safdie picture.
The idea of painting the Statue of Liberty orange was broached (to no avail), but one idea rose above the rest in the zeitgeist, and it even featured some brand synergy with Chalamet's co-star, Tyler the Creator, who plays the role of Wally under his given name, Tyler Okonma: fly the Marty Supreme blimp over Camp Flog Gnaw and drop ping-pong balls on the crowd.
"Tyler is headlining Flog Gnaw," Chalamet declared via Rolling Stone. "We should have the blimp go above Flog Gnaw and rain ping-pong balls, Marty Supreme-branded, rain ping-pong balls on everyone.
"I don’t want to put anybody in an unsafe condition, but I don’t want to be too safe about putting out this movie. If it’s the difference between, you know what I mean, someone losing an arm putting out the movie, but someone gaining an arm intellectually when they see it, I’m a fan of the latter."
Unfortunately – or maybe fortunately – for fans who descended on Dodger Stadium for Night 1 of the festival, a shower of orange ping pong balls did not fall during Tyler's set, but the trailer for Marty Supreme was played twice before his performance, which spanned his entire career over 22 tracks.
Fans took pictures of the non-rigid airship, and of the graphics promoting the film, and in the end were reminded that Tyler's next project after Don't Tap the Glass is a film that drops on Christmas Day, just like A24 hoped.
