'This Is Spinal Tap' director Rob Reiner dead at 78

Unsettling news broke this week of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, who were found dead in their Los Angeles home as a result of an apparent homicide. Reiner, a sitcom actor and film director, made his mark in the world of music with his direction of 1984's This Is Spinal Tap. He was 78 years old, while his wife was 68.

After acting for eight years on popular sitcom All In the Family, Reiner went on to direct a litany of beloved films, such as When Harry Met Sally... His first feature, a 1984 mockumentary about a British band, became legend in the rock world. This Is Spinal Tap saw heavy rotation on tour buses, while bringing the phrase "turning [x] up to 11" into the lexicon. Hell, this author has a volume knob set to 11 tattooed on his right bicep.

Just before his passing, Reiner came out with a sequel to the original, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, which depicts the band reuniting for a final show. Reiner's death is still under investigation; his son, 32-year-old Nick Reiner, has been arrested and is being questioned as a suspect.
