In advance of an extensive tour scheduled for 2025, Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová are set to release a new single titled “People We Used To Be” under their project, The Swell Season. This new track follows their 2023 effort, The Answer Is Yes, which was recorded at Irglová's Icelandic studio, Masterkey, run by her and husband, Sturla Mio Thorisson.
The music video for “People We Used To Be” was directed by Radim Vanous and features scenes of Hansard and Irglová busking in Prague, mirroring their performances from the film Once.
Irglová talked about the lyrical themes of the song:
“It’s a song about trying to reconcile with what feels like an end of an era and allowing one’s self to mourn the people we used to be, while choosing to fight for the person we love and the life we built with them. It is a song of defiance and determination as much as heart aching nostalgia.”
Apparently, fans should be able to anticipate further updates regarding new music from The Swell Season in the coming weeks. Their last album, Strict Joy, was released in 2009.
Recently, Hansard and Irglová participated in promotional activities in New York, which included an impromptu performance at the small venue Scratcher, where they were joined by various musicians from the touring cast of Once, as well as photographer Danny Clinch, who played harmonica. Additionally, Hansard performed on March 26 during a tribute to Patti Smith at Carnegie Hall.
The upcoming tour for The Swell Season is set to kick off on May 13 in Amsterdam, continuing through September 24 in Seattle.
