Yesterday (April 6), The Strokes announced their seventh LP, Reality Awaits, six years after their last album release, The New Abnormal. Today, they debuted their new song “Going Shopping” live, and some fans have received via mail a cassette tape with the song on it.
On their second warm-up show in San Francisco ahead of their top-billing set at Coachella, the band played the new song for the audience. “I guess, why not, right?, it's already out there, new song,” frontman Julian Casablancas announced before the ensemble played the tune.
Watch a fan recording below:
The reason Casablancas says the song is “already out there” is that the week before, the band set up a Laylo page with an illustration of four horses pulling a cassette tape, where you could sign up with your phone number and then send your mailing address to a phone number they created, claiming they’ll “try to share something soon.”
They apparently sent out 100 numbered cassette tapes. A fan received tape number 82, with a sticker on the front reading “Going Shopping.” Luckily, they must have found or had a cassette player lying around nearby and uploaded the track on Reddit for everyone to listen to. Check it below:
Received this in the mail after texting my mailing address to the SMS signup last week 👀
