Following last month's cancellation of their remaining European tour dates after Jonny Greenwood was hospitalized for a serious infection, The Smile (also featuring Thom Yorke and Tom Skinner) quietly put out a very limited edition 12" vinyl containing two new songs, "Don't Get Me Started" and "The Slip" – the trio's first new material since their second album, Wall of Eyes, was released in January this year through XL Recordings.
Already a feature of the band's live sets from earlier in the year, "Don't Get Me Started" was released digitally a few days later. The Smile also shared a video for the track by London-based audiovisual artist Weirdcore, whose previous credits include Aphex Twin, Arca, and Yorke and Greenwood's 'other' band Radiohead.
"The Slip", meanwhile, remains a vinyl-only exclusive. But perhaps not for much longer, if clues and ciphers scattered across the band's various social media accounts are to be believed. Fans on Reddit have quickly solved the ones that have appeared, leading to speculation that a new album will be announced imminently. At the time of this writing, eight song titles and their position in the tracklist have been decoded, with at least two more expected to be revealed.

Further speculation suggests that the album may be a collection of outtakes from the Wall of Eyes sessions, potentially called Cutouts – a reference to a line from the lyrics of the Wall of Eyes track "Friend of a Friend" that appears in the recent band photo above. As Redditors have pointed out, the word "CutOuts" was used as a password to access the "Don't Get Me Started" video on their website when it dropped on 8 August.
Additionally, it's been a busy year for Skinner – he's also been out on the road supporting his own album, Voices of Bishara Live at "mu", which came out in May via International Anthem.
