It's been 15 years since the last proper studio album from experimental rock band The Fiery Furnaces. They put out a double single back in 2020 ("Down At the So and So on Somewhere" b/w "The Fortune Teller's Revenge") but otherwise have kept pretty mute, leaving founding siblings Eleanor and Matthew Friedberger to continue working in their respective solo capacities.
But now, the band has surprise-released Stuck in My Head, a collection of 20 songs recorded live at Figure 8 Recording in Brooklyn. Featuring Eleanor on vocals, Matthew on various synths and sequencers, Noah Hecht and Cameron Wisch on drum kit, Brian Betancourt on bass guitar, and Emily Lee on keyboards, the live recording was captured by Katie Von Schleicher and Nate Mendelsohn with no overdubs. It was the mixed and mastered by Jonathan Schenke.
The album – which is a Bandcamp exclusive right now – travels across the band's entire discography, namely their wildly prolific run from 2003 - 2009, where they released eight different albums, mostly in their signature proggy style of winding epics that switch on a dime and have many phases.
Stuck in My Head features some of their oldest songs (like "Leaky Tunnel" or "Don't Dance Her Down" from their debut Gallowsbird's Bark), some from their most acclaimed records like Blueberry Boat and Bitter Tea, all the way up to that aforementioned 2020 single. In typical Furnaces fashion, the band skates through each song with abandon, hopping from one to the next, sometimes drastically shortening or extending them.
You can stream and purchase Stuck in My Head on the band's Bandcamp.
